We have developed a system for sales staff to access database systems which contain the information on customers and travel plans through mobile terminals, such as a notebook Personal Computer (PC), from their location. This system uses a Java-based mobile agent system. Although it takes a comparatively long time for the first retrieval because the agent has to move to the mobile terminal, it is allowable for practical use. After the first retrieval, the communication time is nearly equal to the time for data transmission. We also propose the Intranet configuration where the mobile terminal can access to the server from on-board Local Area Network (LAN).

Shunting scheduling problems at railway stations can be regarded as a sort of resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP). Unlike the normal RCPSPs, however, shunting scheduling problems require that the number of work which consists of a project has to be dynamically changed in the process of solving the problem and some of the work has to be performed at a prescribed timing, for example. We propose an efficient algorithm for shunting scheduling problems combining probabilistic local search and PERT (Program Evoluation and Review Technique). Local search and PERT are combined so that the candidates for answers in the local search process are evaluated by PERT. This enables us to reduce the search space of the local search to a great extent and makes the algorithm work quite fast. We have confirmed the effectiveness of our algorithm through several experiments using actual train schedule data.

We propose a method to estimate the number of on-board passengers for a given train traffic rescheduling plan. Based on the estimates by this method, we can calculate the evaluation indices of the rescheduling plan from the viewpoint of passengers. Our method is composed of two interactive simulations. One is a train traffic simulation that represents the movements of trains based on the given rescheduling plan. The other is a passengers flow simulation that represents passengers' choices for their own desirable trains based on the Logit model. We show how our method works with a simple example that clarifies inherent problems.

This paper presents a new interactive guidance system for passengers. The system developed for the visually disabled consists of a cane, a portable information terminal, and radio tag-installed Braille blocks. The tag reader at the tip of the cane reads the location data in the tag and transmits it to the portable information terminal by radio waves. The information terminal generates appropriate guide and navigation messages by utilizing geographical information and personal data of the user. The user can interactively acquire the messages by communicating with the system. We carried out a field test to evaluate the system at a station in Tokyo. In this test, a number of visually disabled persons used the system in the actual conditions. The results of the test have shown good availability of the system.

There are a number of barriers for wheelchair users travelling by train. Due to this disadvantage, they need more information than non-handicapped people. Nevertheless, they have restraint in obtaining the information to ensure safe travel. It is required, therefore, not only to eliminate physical barriers at stations and on trains, but also to offer high-quality information to compensate for the insufficient railway facilities that are still at improvement stages. To solve the problems in the current information services, the technique proposed in this paper uses Internet and animations to guide wheelchair travelers. It enables as many wheelchair users as possible to easily obtain the information they need and intuitively understand its contents.

Many railway companies in Japan have adopted a computerized facility management system for better efficiency and other benefits. There are some serious problems, however, such as high costs of initial data registration and inconsistency between ledgers and drawings. In order to solve these problems, we have proposed a facility management system called Dynamic Generation System (DGS). Further, we developed a method to construct a database as a facility ledger, by arranging facilities on the drawing interactively and setting attribute data. We show an example of the method of data writing on drawings applied to electric power facilities.

This paper reports the Intranet System for the next-generation OA system on the basis of RTRI's OA system. We developed a prototype of Intranet type OA system and summarized the features of system construction and system development technique. We systematized an evaluation model to which mathematical analysis is applied for capacity evaluation of the system, and developed a simulator for multi-use situation of server. With the simulator and a capacity evaluation tool, we measured the response time, evaluated the validity of the Intranet System based on the results of mathematical analysis model researches, and estimated the response time by changing the rate of arrival. We propose to construct a next-generation Intranet OA system with Web browser as a client, and Web server, Database server, Groupware server and Certification Server.

CyberRail is an enhanced railway system which we are proposing for the realization of integrated, intermodal passenger transport in which different modes of transportation will be cooperating with each other. In this paper, we discuss the basic concept and user services of CyberRail currently under development, as well as some key technologies needed to realize CyberRail. Also discussed is the necessity of Cyberrail system architecture, which will be essential for the interoperability with systems other than railways (e.g. navigation systems for people traveling in other transportation modes). We believe that CyberRail can contribute to the realization of a safe, efficient, and comfortable intermodal transportation system, which would be impossible with the improvements of road transport alone.
