As far as pediatrics is concerned, it is difficult to cure cerebral palsy and mental retardation. Guided by the traditional Chinese medical theory of jingluo (channels and collaterals), we tested the yuan (primary) acupoints along the twelve jing (channels) in 60 children who were suffering from either cerebral palsy (CP) or mental retardation (MR) using the channel acupoint characteristic picture monitor.
At the same time, we made a comparison between these children and sixty healthy children. We got 1440 pairs of curves from the tests. The processed statistics showed that in the balance rates of the two groups'curves, seven jing (channels) had notable differences. This indicated that CP and MR are multi-channel disorders. In treating these cases, we selected the acupuncture points along these disordered channels and used various of acupuncture therapies, including scalp acupuncture, point injection, body acupuncture and auricular seed-pressing, supported by massage and functional exercise. Among the sixty cases, forty-eight were given our treatment. After six courses of treatment (60 times altogether), the balance rates of the disordered channels were raised obviously. The statistics showed P<0.05: the effective rates of the evaluation of social adaptability behavior and motor function are 61.1% and 50% respectively.
