The Tateyama volcano is located in the central part of the Japanese Islands and situated on the northern part of Norikura volcanic zone.
Volcanic activities of the Tateyama volcano in the late Quaternary, were classified into four stages. Andestic lava and pyroclastic materials were erupted during those activities. Eruption of the second stage produced so many pyroclastic materials as forming caldera. Afterwards this caldera was eroded and grew larger. A part of caldera wall was broken at Shiraiwa about twenty thousand years ago, and as the result, a lot of debris flowed over the caldera into Joganji River. The Tateyama Sabo Work is one of the largest Sabo work in Japan. Its most important work is the control of the Tombidoro which was produced by the deformation of the Tombiyama (Mt. Tombi) in the earthquake induced by the Atotsugawa fault in 1858. Deformation of the caldera wall by the earthquake may have occurred at any place in the caldera. But why did Tombi collapse occur at Tombiyama? From investigating topography of Kanayamadani and the Tombi collapse, I may conclude the cause of Tombi collapse is that Tombiyama was the terminal place of the right lateral Atotsugawa fault, and force of tension stress and depression concentrated here.

DTM-based Topographical Analysis of Landslides Caused by an Earthquake

Landslides during an earthquake often occur at peculiar topography, that is, steep and convex slopes. We examined these features by two parameters using digital terrain models of actual mountain slopes which had suffered from earthquake-induced landslides. These parameters, one is slope gradient and the other is mean curvature, worked well distinguishing those landslide slopes among all slopes. Especially when these parameters were derived on particular node distances, they had significant effects. These special node distances should reflect dominant scales of principal mechanisms or factors of initiation of the landslides. The dominant scales were lOm for gradient and 50m for curvature. Using these results, we developed an evaluation method concerning the susceptibility of slopes to earthquake landslides.

The morphology of confluence points along mountanious streams is affected by geomorphological characteristics of tributaries, such as catchment size and channel slope. These characteristics also influence the way in which sediment is transported through channels and the volume of sediment supplied to confluence points. This is demonstrated at the Oyabu creek in the Kyushu mountain range, based on 2-years of field observations. The results were as follows.
(1) At the Oyabu creek, sediment yielded from tributaries accumulated at the confluence points of relatively small steep tributaries, and was transported to the lower reach of confluence points in the case of large gentle tributaries.
(2) Changes in sediment volume depended on the preceding volume of sediment in storage, irrespective of tributaries characteristics.
(3) Volumes of sediment yielded from tributaries increased with increasing catchment size.

The author has produced a newly-designed testing apparatus to study the liquefied failures occurred at a natural granitic mountainous slope. As the result of the experiment with the apparatus, the intact weathered granitic soils have not liquefied. However, the test with the sample removed fine particles has been successful and the partial liquefied failure occurred in the apparatus. From the experiment, the possibility and the danger was confirmed, if the soil in a low density were enough saturated, the pore pressure could suddenly rise before few displacement and little deformation, and then drastically fluidize.
