The ignition behaviors of ammonia-air mixtures were studied by means of the bumer method・ Diffusion and pre-mixing bumer systems were used. Two kinds of capacitance sparks were tested for ignition on a nozzle burner to examine ignition conditions, The capacitance sparks of “rectangular” form which had the duration of O.1 to 1 ms were much more superior than those of the direct discharge from a condenser, The mixture made from the mutual diffusion of ammonia and air,on the nozzle burner, was ignited with the energy of 30 mJ of a spark which had the duration of O.1 ms. The stabilities of diffusion flame and pre-mixed flame on the nozzle bumer were also invetigated. The results showed that both Hames are unstabIe at room temperature as already mentioned in the literature. In a glass tube of 70 mm.diameter, the energies required for ignition of pre-mixed gases were detemlned at ambient temperature and pressure. That results gave a good agreement with those of the burner method. The minimum ignition energy was 7.5mJ for the spark which had the dumtion of O.1ms,while the value was 105 mJ for a 1μs spark・ The highly pure ammonia prepared for the semiconductor manufacture was ignited by the similar energy as that for the commercial use.
