The binding of human follicle-stimulating hormone and human luteinizing hormone to ovarian tumor specimens from 29 patients was analyzed. The specific binding of human follicle-stimulating hormone were demonstrated in three tumors of epithelial origin (serous cystadenoma and mucinous cystadenoma) and in two of sex cord-stromal origin (theca cell tumor and granulosa cell tumor). The specific binding of human luteinizing hormone were found in one tumor of epithelial origin (mucinous cystadenoma) and in one of sex cord-stromal origin (theca cell tumor). The hLH and hFSH binding characteristics of the ovarian tumors were similar to those of the normal ovarian tissue. The surface-binding autoradiographic study revealed that the binding sites for gonadotropins were localized in the stomal tissue. In patients with ovarian tumors which possess gonadotropin receptors, relatively high estradiol and progesterone concentrations were found in peripheral or ovarian venous blood. The results indicate the presence of gonadotropin receptors within a certain type of human ovarian neoplasms.

Silver binding nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) were evaluated in five cases with normal endocervix, 10 of glandular dysplasia, 7 of early invasive adenocarcinoma (5 of adenocarcinoma in situ, 2 of microinvasive adenocarcinoma), and 8 of invasive adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were evaluated, postoperatively, with a computer-assisted method (Nikon, LUZEX 3).
The number of NORs and the area per nucleus were significantly higher in patients with glandular dysplasia, early invasive adenocarcinoma, and invasive adenocarcinoma than in patients with normal endocervix. Significant differences were also found in the number of NORs and the area per nucleus between glandular dysplasia cases and adenocarcinoma cases.
It was concluded that glandular dysplasia might be precancerous lesions and that the area of NORs per nucleus might play an important role in the evaluation of AgNORs.

A human monoclonal antibody (MAb) with strong sperm immobilizing and agglutinating activities was prepared from a spent culture medium of a human-mouse heterohybridoma (H6-3C4) established in our laboratory. The molecular natures of the antigen corresponding to the MAb (H6-3C4) were studied. A large amount of the antigen was present in human seminal plasma (HSP) as a soluble substance. When HSP precipitated with saturated ammonium sulfate was fractionated by gel filtration on Sephacryl S-300 column, most of the antigen activities was eluted in the void fraction as large macromolecules (over 670kD). However, when the void fraction was subjected to sodium dodecylsulfated polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) in either reducing or non-reducing conditions and transblotted to a nitrocellulose membrane (Western blotting), the antigen was detected as a broad immunostaining band around the 20kD region. Further fractionation of the void fraction from Sephacryl S-300 chromatography by Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC) on ProRPC HR5/2 column revealed that the antigenic molecule was eluted as a single peak of a substance with a high hydrophobicity.

Synopsis A 33-year -old healthy pregnant woman, gravida 3, para 3, was admitted to a nearby hospital because of the onset of labor pains during the 41st week of pregnancy.
Suddenly, she complained of an acute epigastric pain while straining during the second stage of labor and was delivered by vacuum extraction. As the epigastric pain was severe and continued, she was admitted to our hospital. The serum amylase value was 871 U/1 and abdominal computed tomography demonstrated swelling in the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed. Recovery was uneventful, and she was discharged 19 days after admission.
Pregnancy may be causative in the development of acute pancreatitis. In this case, increased intraabdominal pressure resulting from the enlarged uterus and straining during the second stage of labor might have been among the factors causing acute pancreatitis.

Synopsis Twenty one cases of colporrhexis (rupture of the vaginal vault) complicated in delivery, which had been experienced in Jilin City, China, were reported in detail. And our newly established operation procedure “extraperitoneal incision of the vaginal vault”, instead of cesarean section, was presented, including the indications and results. The surgical method based on the mechanism of colporrhexis was successfully applied to fifty eight patients with distocia in the second stage of delivery.

Surgical removal of a giant ovarian tumor is considered to cause various intraoperative or postoperative complications, and most common complications documented in the literature are pulmonary or circulatory failures. In the present study, we deal with a 69-year-old woman who received, despite the coexistence of primary biliary cirrhosis, complete removal of a mucinous cystic tumor of the ovary weighing 20kg, and several clinical problems are discussed concerning the operative procedure or postoperative management for such giant ovarian tumor.

A case of retroperitoneal schwannoma is presented. A 36-year-old woman visited our clinic with a complaint of sense of lower abdominal tumor. Preoperatively, a gynecological examination, ultrasonography and CT scan revealed left ovarian cystic tumor with partially solid region. The titer ofAFP, CEA, CA-125, CA-199 and SCC in the serum were under the cut-off level. Postoperatively, a retroperitoneal tumor was found, which measured 8.5×9.5 × 8.0cm in size and weighed 120g. Histologically, the tumor was diagnosed to be benign schwannoma of two differing types of Antoni A and B. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for S-100 protein and neuron-specific enolase (NSE), which confirmed this tumor to be of nerve origin. The patient complained of motor and sensory disturbances in the left L4-S1 region after the operation. Now we treat her in the outpatient clinic under orthopedical care.
