    In the cosmetic industry, many inorganic powders are used, and for their easy handling and improvement of functional properties of the powders, various things are demanded. Generally, powder characteristics and surface phenomena concerning the inorganic powders depend largly on their surface properties. Therefore, surface characterization of powder particles is very important to clarify the mechanisms of powder phenomena, and to use effecively the powders. At the surface of the powders, continuity of chemical bond disappears and the surface property becomes more active according to its unsaturate degree.
    In this paper, physical and chemical states of real surface, for examples surface conductivity, adhesion, acid-base, and oxidation-reduction properties are discussed in relation to the peculiar nature of the solid surface.

    This article reviews the optical properties of pigments used in make-up cosmetics. In white pigments such as titanium oxide and zinc oxide, particle size is controlled between 150 and 400nm to maximize light scattering. Inversely, since the absorption of ultraviolet light is the purpose of employing titanium oxide microparticles in cosmetics, their particle size is reduced to less than 50nm so as to maximize ultraviolet absorption and to minimize light scattering. The colors of pigments containing transition metals such as iron and cobalt are caused by the absorption of visible light, but light scattering takes part in their tones of color. In nacreous pigments, a variety of pearly luster effects are created by utilizing the light interference in a TiO2 or Fe2O3 thin film coated on mica platelets. Irridescent effects are given by the combination of the interference effects and the light absorption by colored materials deposited on a TiO2 thin film. As a extender pigment for foundations in cake form, TiO2-Al2O3 doubly coated mica is prepared, which shows the appearance of natural luster and has excellent whiteness.

    Hyaluronic acid, a dermal component, depolymerization by superoxide and UV irradiation is considered as one way of skin-aging process. In this study, we screened plant extracts to find effective materials on inhibiting this depolymerization. Ascorbic acid-Fe system and UVA irradiation were used to generate superoxide. In result, Myrica rubra, Rhus chinensis, and Poeonia albiflora strongly inhibited the depolymerization in the Ascorbic acid-Fe system. On irradiating UVA, Myrica rubra and Rhus chinensis inhibited the depolymerization, Coptis chinensis also inhibited the depolymerization by UVA because of its absorption in UVA range, however it weakly inhibited the depolymerization in the Ascorbic acid-Fe system.
    In conclusion, since these plant extracts will inhibit hyaluronic acid depolymerization by superoxide, they can be expected to apply to cosmetics.

    A color locus of a certain color pigment mixture is generally known draw a specific loop on a chromaticity diagram. It was found that an increase in chroma without any change of hue and value was observed by the addition of BaSO4, an extender pigment, to a dispersion of Lithol rubine B (R-201) in caster oil. In addition, the chroma of the dispersion increased as the difference of the refractive indexes between the added extender pigment and caster oil decresed. The mechanism of the enhancement in the chroma was considered to be due to a “spacer effect”. It increases an optical dispersing ability of color pigments by means of the extender pigments, which are inserted among the particles of Lithol rubine B. The same phenomenon was also observed when Lithol rubine BCA (R-202) was used.
    In order to advance the spacer effect and to stabilize it, the color pigments and the extender pigments were hybridized using a ball mill. The chroma of this hybridized pigment was greater than that of simply mixed pigments, and the hybridized one also had an excellent dispersing ability. The structural analysis of the hybridized pigments by means of the cross-sectional observation using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the surface of extender pigment was covered with color pigment particles uniformly. The thickness of the color pigments layer could be controlled by the ratio of hybridization. Furthermore, the hybridized pigment was found to yield almost same effects as the color pigments of smaller particle size which were well dispersed. This result is explained by an increase in absorption and a changes in scattering due to decreased color pigment thickness of hybridized pigments.

    We investigated the damaged hair with the transmission electron microscope with respect to the stractural changes of a hair. An ultrasonic generator was used for the purpose of accelerating the damage of a hair experimentally. A healthy hair and a cold wave treated hair were damaged by the above method. Also, a damaged hair in real life was collected from subjects and was investigated by 10cm from the root tothe tip.
    After a healthy hair was treated by the ultrasonic generator, elution of hair components such as inter macrofibriller material, CMC, and endocuticle was apparent. Elusion from a cold wave treated hair tended to be accelerated when damaged by the ultrasonic generator (experimentally damaged hair). The investigation on the damaged hair in real life showed that the cuticles were peeled off as the external change and elusion of hair components was recognized as the internal change. Especially at the part of hair in the split end, a number of cracks and elution ofhair components were found.
    In other words, the damages appeared at the cuticle part and cortex part of the experimentally damaged hair are not much different from the ones of the damaged hair in real life. These results suggest that thus ultrasonic treating method is effective in reproducing the hair damage in real life.

    The adsorption of Octadecyltrimemmonuim chloride (C18 TAC)/Sodium-N-lauroyl-N-metyl-β-alanine (NaLMA) mixed system on keratin powder which was used as substitute for human hair was studied. The adsorption isotherm of C18 TAC showed irreversible adsorption, resulting in the decrease of the kinetic frictional coefficient compared to other cationic surfactants (C10TAC, C12TAC, C14TAC, C16TAC). The adsorption istherm of NaLMA was of the Langmuirtype, but those of C18TAC/MaLMA mixed system showed irreversible adsorption owing to strong interaction with keratin powder. The amount of adsorption was maximum at molar ratio 7/3 of C18TAC/NaLMA. At the same ratio, the kinetic frictional coefficient and denaturation rate showed minimum values. That the behavior of C18TAC/NaLMA mixed system is similar to nonionic surfactant aqueous solution and that the monomer concentrations of C18TAC having the strong interaction decrease by formation of ionic pair between C18TAC and MaLMA may suffice as explanation for the above results.

    The frequencies of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) in human lymphocyte cultures were studied under various conditions such as free-radical loading by hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase (HX-XO) system, which is a well known generator of superoxide, and SCE suppression by specific herb extracts, Scutellaria baicalensis and Rosa multiflora T., added to the system. Intraindividual comparison of SCE frequencies showed a significant increase in an HX-XO group, though interindividual variations were great.
    Meanwhile, with the addition of these extracts, the SCE frequencies decreased dramatically. These results indicate that both Scutellaria baicalensis and Rosa multiflora T. are able to reduce the magnitude of free radical impairment to cultured human lymphocyte chromatin structures.
    These extracts showed themselves to have a suppression effect on the SCE frequencies in human lymphocytes exposed to free radical generator system of HX-XO, because their effects appeared to be constant even among different individuals. It would be interesting to further examine a role of other oxygen radicals as PMA, producing SCEs in human lymphocytes and to clarify the mechanism by which these herb extracts inhibit SCEs generated by free radicals.

    It has been reported by Von Scott that α-hydroxy acids have potent effects on wrinkle-repairing. MTT (3-(4, 5-Dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium Bromide) method has been used for estimation of cytotoxicity, mitogenic activity and cell viability. We attempted the development of the cell activity estimating method by using MTT method and the investigation of α-hydroxy acids-wrinkle repairing mechanism on human dermis fibroblast culture system. It has been found that glycolic acid increased the activity which was estimated by the MTT method. Subsequently the proliferation effect of glycolic acid was examined. Glycolic acid showed high proliferating activity.
    Furthermore, the effect on collagen synthesis was examined.
    However, the enhancement on collagen synthesis by glycolic acid was not found.
    From these results, it was speculated that the wrinkle-repairing of glycolic acid was realized by the enhancement of proliferation in dermal fibroblasts.
