Methylotrophic yeasts have been used for heterologous protein production using strong methanol-inducible promoters where methanol is used as a carbon source as well as an inducer. Recently, several new technologies for protein production utilizing such promoters have been developed, where carbon sources other than methanol, such as glucose, glycerol, and ethanol, are used. Here we introduce these technologies including our own work.
