The correlation between potassium permanganate (KMnO
4) consumption, toal organic carbon (TOC), and ultraviolet (UV) absorption of the aqueous extracts from rubber products used in contact with foods and medical supplies was investigated.
KMnO
4 consmption and TOC of the extracts were 4.2-327ppm, and 0.3-49.6ppm, respectively, and ther UV absorbances at 220nm were 0.03-5.20. These results show an adequate correlation among the three indicators, and the correlation coefficients between KMnO
4 consumption/TOC, TOC/absorbance at 220nm, and KMnO
4 consumption/absorbance at 220nm were 0.80, 0.78, and 0.97, respectively.
The measurement of UV spectra of aqueous extracts was effective to identify the existence of the compounds decomposed little by KMnO
4 and to estimate the kinds of migrated compounds.
