In order to obtain data to assist in the improvement of drinking water quality, a questionnaire sheet survey was conducted in Nishinomiya city regarding residents' awareness of water. The survey was conducted in July 1991 on a sample of 5, 200 with a 63.4% valid response rate.
The results of the survey were analyzed to obtain a picture of residents' lifestyle in relation to water use. The following conclusions were obtained: 1) The percentage of people taking a bath every day increases with household size and age. 2) In about 40% of households, at least one member takes a morning shower. 3) The incidence of daily clothes washing increases with household size. The younger the age group of the household, the more likely it is to wash clothes in the evening. 4) About half of Nishinomiya's households use synthetic detergent to wash clothes. This is lower than was found in a survey using the same questionnaire in Kyoto and the area around Lake Biwako. Further, some Nishinomiya residents mistook synthetic detergent for soap powder. This indicates the importance for water resource protection of educating the public regarding the pollutant effect on water supplies of synthetic detergent and of encouraging the use of soap powder. 5) In households with a flush toilet, the quantity of water used per person per day is 257.1 liters, or about 50 liters more than the 208.9 liters used in one without flush toilet. 6) The higher their level of awareness, the more ready residents are to practice economy in the use of water. Overall, the survey revealed the importance, for protection of the water environment, of environmental education on water and sustained campaigns targeting drinking water and water pollution.
