    Fungal contamination on sash windows was examined. Mold counts were highest on the inside lower bead, followed by the rail. The counts on all parts of the sash windows examined were higher in winter than in summer. For example, the averages on the inside lower bead of the windows increased by about sevenfold in winter, and were about 0.6 times higher than on the lower bead of bathroom doors. In both summer and winter, Cladosporium was predominant followed by Aureobasidium.
    This fungal contamination on sash windows seems to be promoted by condensation depending on low outside temperatures in winter. Mold counts on sash windows affected by condensation every day were about 37 times higher than on windows not affected by condensation. A marked correlation between mold counts in summer and winter was also observed. This fungal contamination in winter is thought to persist until summer.
    More fungal contamination was found on sash windows with adherent dirt than on windows on which dirt was not detected. Specifically, much of the dirt on the inside lower bead was thought to consist of fungal hyphae.

    The contact sensitizing potentials and cross reactivity patterns of 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-4-(methylsulfonyl)pyridine (TCMSP) were evaluated in a modified guinea pig maximization test (GPMT). TCMSP was identified as a strong sensitizer in the GPMT with a minimum induction dose of 5 ppm, and a minimum elicitation dose of 50 ppm or less. Among pyridine derivatives tested, TCMSP-sensitized animals cross-reacted to pentachloropyridine. In addition, the animals reacted to 2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, a chlorobenzene derivative. Pentachloropyridine exhibited a sensitization potential in the GPMT, and cross-reacted to both TCMSP and 2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalonitrile.

    The protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica is a causative agent of human amebiasis. Recent molecular studies have shown genetic diversity among E. histolytica isolates, thus indicating the usefulness of isolate identification at the genotype level in understanding the molecular epidemiology of amebic infection. In the present study, we identified the genotypes of seven isolates from patients in Osaka City by sequence analysis of polymorphic loci. The genotypes of the isolates examined were varied at every locus. The five isolates showed novel combinations of genotypes quite different from those of the isolates reported previously, and therefore appeared to be novel types peculiar to Osaka City. This is the first report on the genetic characterization of E. histolytica isolates in Osaka City.
