    This paper analyzed spring (April) and autumn (October) climate change in Osaka City, central Japan, during the period from 1883 (or 1890) to 2006. During these 124 (or 117) years, the April monthly means of daily mean, maximum, and minimum air temperature increased by 2.3°C, 1.9°C, and 3.2°C, respectively, while the relative humidity decreased by 16%. The relative humidity decreased at a low rate of 4.1% per 100 years in 1883-1940, but at a high rate of 17% per 100 years in 1941-2006. The October monthly means of daily mean, maximum, and minimum air temperature increased by 2.5°C, 1.8°C, and 3.6°C, respectively, while the relative humidity decreased by 12%. The relative humidity stayed at a higher level in 1883-1940, decreased at a high rate of 29% per 100 years in 1941-1980, then stayed again at a lower level in 1981-2006. An influence of urbanization on climate change from the middle of the 20th century was suggested by the April and most of the October data. No such influence was however indicated by the October monthly average of daily maximum temperature.

    It is important to know the mineral element content of foods, which is affected by several factors, including soil contamination by pesticide or fertilizer, cooking conditions, and cooking utensils. We compared Zn, Mn and Cu intakes estimated using a food composition table (FCT) with values measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The measured Mn content of dishes containing spinach was significantly higher than the corresponding FCT-based estimate. We studied the effect of home-based food preparation practices on the Zn, Mn and Cu content of dishes cooked with used utensils. The Mn content of foods cooked in a pan of aluminum alloy coated with fluoroplastic was higher than before cooking. The results suggest that thermolysis of fluorinated polymers, such as the commercial polymer Teflon, can cause Mn migration from aluminum alloy into foods. Our studies show that food preparation using the techniques available in the home may be responsible for decrease or increase in mineral content. Further studies are needed to ascertain the effects.

    A survey was made of organic pollution in the rivers of the Osaka City area during the last decade. Despite the decrease in carbonaceous BOD, there was little improvement in BOD overall due to an increase in nitrogenous BOD. The nitrogenous BOD/BOD ratio has increased because of the inflow of sewage treatment water rich in nitrogen compounds. The mechanism of nitrification has however not been elucidated. COD has improved but ubiquitous pollution was indicated even in sites with low BOD. Suspended solids were little related to organic pollution.

    The protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica, is a causative agent of human amebiasis. Recent molecular studies show the genetic diversity among the isolates, and therefore identification of the isolates at the genotype level is important for control of the E. histolytica infection and for understanding the population structure of E. histolytica genotypes. In the present study, we identified the genotypes of the twenty-two isolates from patients in Osaka City by sequencing analysis of three polymorphic loci. Four genotypes (B, E, D, G) were found in locus 1-2, eight (A5, A5v, A6, A7, Cv, A6/Cv, A10/A5, A10/A6) in locus 5-6 and four (A, B, C, D, F) in chitinase. The following genotype at each locus was dominant type: genotype E in locus 1-2 (68%), A10/A5 in locus 5-6 (33%), B in chitinase (58%). Moreover, the isolates in Osaka City examined were classified into nine types (I to IX) based on the combination of genotypes. The present study showed the genetic polymorphism among the isolates in Osaka City and the possible presence of isolates peculiar to Osaka City.
