    This paper analyzes the branching strategies of regional banks in Kitakyushu City. Kitakyushu City, located at the northern tip of Kyushu, has the highest ratio of residents aged 65 years and over within the general population among all of the ordinance-designated cities in Japan, and faces a declining population. More precisely, the paper analyzes The Kitakyushu Bank, Ltd., The Bank of Fukuoka, Ltd., and The Nishi-Nippon City Bank, which have many branches, comparably, within Kitakyushu City. Specifically, the paper evaluates each branch by analyzing its business density, population density, and competitors in the sales area of the branch. The empirical analysis shows that for each bank, there is a possibility to still improve the profitability in strategic deployments and advantageous location of functional branch.

    Since the 1990s, structural change has occurred in the Japanese financial system, and is considered to have an impact upon the lending channel in the monetary policy transmission mechanism. Based on the theory of the lending channel, this paper analyzes the lending channel after 1991. Using panel data, it is shown that the lending channel does exist. However, the portfolio-rebalancing effects stemming from quantitative easing policy have not been found on the lending channel. The findings are thought to have implications for the estimation of the portfolio-rebalancing effects stemming from quantitative easing policy adopted by the Bank of Japan recent years.

    This paper analyses whether internship experiences of undergraduate students influence the chance of getting a job offer. First, by theoretical consideration, we made the hypothesis that internship experiences of students serve as a signal of their ability and, therefore, have the signaling effect on the probability of getting a job offer. Second, we verified the hypothesis by empirical analysis using a questionnaire survey about internship experiences of undergraduate students. In particular, using the information whether or not students with internship experience conveyed their internship experience to firms during their job-hunting process, we examined whether conveying internship experience has any impact on the probability of getting a job offer. The results from probit analysis reveal that conveying internship experience to firms has a statistically significant positive impact on the probability of getting a job offer. This suggests that internship experience of students has the signaling effect on the chance of getting a job offer.

    This paper focuses on the relation between information-related activities and realistic understanding of future. We applied this theory to 730 students from elementary school to university students through the financial education which include six perspectives using "Life Planning Game". Students are classified into three groups according to their information-related activities and analysed by the level of realistic understanding of future. As a result, students with high abilities of "collecting information" and "utilizing information" show the high level of realistic understanding of future. Both abilities of "collecting information" and "utilizing information" are related to realistic understanding of future at elementary school students, junior high school students and university students. "Collecting information" ability is closely related to realistic understanding of future at high school students. It is important to provide more methods of "collecting" and "utilizing" information to elementary school, junior high school and university students, and "collecting" methods of information to high school students to improve the level of realistic understanding of future.

    Much research has analyzed the relationship between class size and scholastic aptitude. Specifically, studies have focused on whether or not reducing class size contributes to improving children's scholastic aptitude. Not all research shows such an impact, with some studies showing no positive effect. These inconsistent results suggest that other factors besides class size have a major influence on scholastic aptitude. This paper not only focuses on class size but also examines the multicollinearity of select factors considered economically relevant. Data on the percentage of correct answers (by third grade public middle school students, from 2007 to 2010) by prefecture obtained from the National Survey of Scholastic Aptitude and Learning Environment were used as the dependent variable. Results of all panel data models used in the paper showed that students in smaller classes tended to answer a higher percentage of answers correctly as compared to their counterparts in larger classes. Moreover, the results clearly suggested that this effect was more pronounced for applied basic knowledge skills in mathematics. The coefficient for the household learning rate used as an explanatory variable was found to be negative, indicating that prefectures with lower levels of scholastic aptitude among public middle schools tend to have more education-oriented households that invest in education outside of school.

    Aging progresses, in Japanese local governments, the cost of welfare has been pressure on the budget. The reason is that, the demand of residents and system of the country has increased the cost of welfare. In this paper, we assumed that budget of the local governments are determined by the demand of residents. We examined the relationship between the current expenditure of local governments and aging by median voter hypothesis. At this time, we assumed that median voter is median age of 20 years of age or older. For the analysis of public demand function, we used the data of the local governments that have less than 100,000 and more than 50,000 populations. We were confirmed that median voter hypothesis is applied in these small and medium cities. From the results of this analysis, we were confirmed that budget of these governments are increased by median age of 20 years of age or older, average salary of civil servants and population. On the other hand, these are decreased by local tax rate and population density.

    While Japanese firms hire and train new graduates as long-term employees, approximately 30% of the newly hired graduates quit jobs within the first three years. However, after which they are often unable to obtain the opportunity of a better job change. Therefore, the anxiety and stress experienced by young full-time employees has increased. In addition, in recent years, as the recruitment procedure of companies have been becoming strict, youth employment consciousness has been increasing. This study examines factors affecting young employees' prospects and factors promoting job commitment by applying a probit model and ordinary least squares (OLS) to the 2003 data on full-time employees under 35, and shows the following: 1)women and men view job stability differently; 2)commitment to firms suffers due to lack of communication, inappropriate job placement, and feelings of inadequacy. It also reduces their willingness to continue working in the same company; 3)men report more work problems but are more committed to jobs than women. This study has suggested that it is important to focus on the problems of young employees, and how to tackle work and to educate young employees in each workplace unit.
