Injection molded products used with fiber-reinforced plastics often exhibit deformation and cracking because of anisotropic property induced fiber orientation.
In our previous study, using the thin-plate less than 1 mm thick, the fiber length distribution through the plate thickness and along the molding direction was investigated. In the present study, detailed analyses of the fiber length distribution, comparing 0.7 mm-thick plate with 3 mm-thick plate, were conducted and the following conclusions were obtained.
1) The average fiber length of 0.7 mm-plate is smaller than that of 3 mm-plate. But the average fiber length distributions through the plate thickness and along the molding direction are similar.
2) The average fiber length of the flow-end section of the plate is larger than those of any other section along the molding direction in both plates and the average fiber length of the layer near to the die wall is smaller than that of the core layer.
3) The position and value of the maximum shear stress between the solid layer and flow layer are considered to have an important influence on the fiber length distribution.
