Influence of glass fiber content on toughness and mechanical properties of long glass fiber reinforced polyphenylene-sulfide composites (PPS/LFT) made by pulltrusion process were examined.
It was found that the glass fibers were oriented in the flow direction at the surface of an injection molded specimen but randomly at the center of it. The size of the oriented area was decreased with the increased of the glass fiber content. As a result, the maximum tensile strength or fracture toughness was obtained with the glass fiber content of 30 vol%, because each strength depended on both the size of the oriented area and the glass fiber content in the domain.
In case of bending test used with U-notched specimens, the increase of elastic strain energy was restrained by the release of strain restriction, which was caused by the detachment of the interface of randomly oriented glass fibers. This leads the relaxation of the stress concentration around the neighboring regions of a notch tip.
Consequently the detachment at the interface between the fibers and the matrix contributed to the toughness improvement.

Urushi (Japanese lacquer) products are fabricated by craftsmen who are extremely skilled at painting Urushi on wooden basis. These products give us high quality sensitivity, therefore, in the plastic industry the analysis of the secret of Urushi products is an important proposition in order to create high quality plastic products. In this report, gloss value, lightness, chromaticness and chromaticity were measured for both Urushi products and sandwich injection moldings in which PC, PC/ABS and ABS resin were used for core and PC resin was used for skin. As results, PC skin and PC core with black pigment product indicated very close values to Urushi product in terms of gloss value, lightness, chromaticness and chromaticity. Additionally, when PC was used for the core, the chromaticity of a* indicated larges values than other moldings, and this means that the change of color to red was large. The superior sensitivity in Urushi products arose from the change of color chromaticity to red, and consequently, the moldings with PC core were close to Urushi products.
