Environmental friendliness is one of the key issues of society. Recent earth environmental concerns concentrate on easy-recycle-material-system, and the use of biodegradable polymer and natural fiber has been paid much attention in composite fields. To apply natural fibers into the structural parts with high mechanical properties, SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) is considered desirable because that SMC can be expected to be used in various fields in terms of high productivity and dimensional stability. In this study, instead of Carbon SMC and Glass SMC, the hybrid SMC that is reinforced by jute cloth and glass cloth is expected to be able to reduce environmental burden and provide adequate strength for structural parts.
Therefore, hybrid SMC with jute cloth and glass cloth as reinforcement was fabricated and compared with the SMC reinforced with jute cloth. 3 point bending test, impact test and cross-sectional observations were performed. It was found that a sheet of glass cloth made SMC is much stronger as compared with the SMC reinforced with jute cloth only. Additionally, a sheet of glass cloth didn't affect its "Degree of Green" (ratio of the weight of the natural materials in the total composite materials). It means that the hybrid SMC might be a good choice for eco-friendly structural parts.
