A composite of zeolite/mesoporous materials was synthesized by a steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) method, using SBA-15 as a starting material. The mesopore wall of SBA-15 with a structure-directing agent (SDA) was treated with steam for several days, leading to the formation of primary or secondary building units on mesoporous SBA-15. It was shown that the hydrophobicity of SDAs, Al source, and Si/Al ratio play a promotional role on the crystallization rate of zeolites in order to enhance the interaction between SDA and the pore wall. It was also shown that the mesostructure can be retained during SAC synthesis by filling carbon into the mesopore.
