Earthquake wave amplification at a particular site, due to local soil conditions, causes severe damage to infrastructures, including both ground structures and buildings. In conventional design practices wherein a generalised design response spectrum is used, it is difficult to efficiently capture the frequency characteristics of the local site condition and the characteristics of past earthquakes at that particular location. In order to achieve this goal real earthquake ground records are required. A vital component of this research was to develop a ground motion database through measurement sensors placed at different depths of ground at various locations in the Tokyo Metro region. The observations began in the year 1976 with periodic change of type of sensors in the process in the advent of expiry and improvement in the technology. The digital records of the data are available since1999 at three locations. The observed data is converted to its binary format with the appropriate calibration suitable for the sensors. Further, corrections and filters have been applied to rectify the data. In addition to this large database, a comprehensive list of metadata characterising the source of the earthquake from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is compiled.
