The present paper deals with the salt marsh community in Notsuke-Zaki (Notsuke sand beach), Prov. Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan. The investigation was carried out during August 18〜20,1960. The zonal arrangement of the salt marsh communities in Notsuke-Zaki was studied by two belt transects, [a]and[b]. According to the results, there are three zones as follows ; 1) Triglochin maritimum zone : Triglochin maritimum isocion and Salicornia europaea isocion, 2) Puccinellia kurilensis zone : Puccinellia kurilensis isocion and 3) Carex Ramenskii zone : Carex Ramenskii isocion. Triglochin maritimum isocion, the representative community of the salt marsh vegetation under consideration, is well developed on a lower part, submerged at high tide. The line transect[α]was set to study the development of Triglochin tussocks from the lower, the sea side, to the upper, the land side, of this community. The results show that the number and the mean basal area of the tussocks tend generally to increase but the mean intervals between individuals to decrease, and that the tussocks finally form a uniform, so-called matlike physiognomy. Salicornia europaea was found usually together with Triglochin sp., but its dominancy was not so remarkable as Triglochin's. The plants, however, developed on bare silt and shifting channels or pans and never on Triglochin tussocks as Glaux sp. The difference of ecological amplitudes between Salicornia sp. and Triglochin sp. is emphasized. Salicornia europaea isocion is recognized in Triglochin zone, and discriminated from Triglochin isocion In the belt transect[a], the salinity of the rhizospheres was measured at eight points. The salinity ranged from 5.4 to 81.9‰, and the lowest value was at the Carex and Potentilla points, and the highest at the Salicornia point. The salinity ranges in the soils of the main plants are : Salicornia sp.; 24.5 to 81.9‰, Triglochin sp.; 30.5 to 57.4‰, and Carex sp. ; 5.4 to 24.6‰ A high salt content is supposed to be a result of the fine dry weather during the investigation.
