A novel FCC process that maximizes propylene production is developed by research teams in Saudi Arabia and Japan. The process, called the High Severity FCC, has been proven in a 30B/D demonstration plant in Saudi Arabia. The High Severity FCC uses a down- flow reactor with a proprietary catalyst under an optimized reaction condition. The propylene yield reached 20mass% during the 30B/D demonstration plant operation.

Toyo Engineering Corporation developed indirect method DME process combining methanol plant using proprietary high active steam reforming catalyst and radial flow methanol reactor and DME synthesis using own developed DME synthesis catalyst. Two DME plants designed by Toyo already started in China as a world first fuel DME plant and a world largest DME plant under operation respectively. Furthermore other two plants are scheduled to start in 2007 in China. Based on these experiences Toyo also developed a large scale DME plant.

Methanol production from CO₂ and methane was carried out with biocatalysts. The system contains 1) water decomposition with solar energy, 2)methane formation from CO₂ and hydrogen, and 3)methanol formation by methane oxidation. Methanol formation from methane was carried out with modified methanotroph. When methanotroph is treated with cyclopropanol, the methanol dehydrogenase is inhibited selectively and methanol production from methane is established.

The addition of boron on a CoMo/Al₂O₃ catalyst has been reported in our previous studies to generate a more active Co-Mo-S (pseudo) Type II. In spite of the formation of the Co-Mo-S (pseudo) Type II, the HDS performance of the catalyst only slightly improved, apparently caused by poor dispersion of MoS₂ particles by the addition of boron. In the present study, citric acid was added to boron-containing Mo/Al₂O₃ and CoMo/Al₂O₃ catalyst to improve the dispersion of MoS₂ particles. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique allowed us to separately study the effect of citric acid on the dispersion of Mo and Co on a CoMo/Al₂O₃ catalyst. We found, by the CVD technique, that the addition of citric acid greatly improved the HDS performance of the catalyst.

¹²⁹Xe NMR spectroscopy, an analytical method for microporous materials, is applied to structural analysis of petroleum refining catalysts such as ultra stable Y zeolite and CoMo hydrodesulfurization catalyst. This study demonstrates that the structural destruction of ultra stable Y zeolite due to the thermal treatment is remarkably promoted by the coexistence of V with basic compounds such as Na⁺. In the case of CoMo hydrodesulfurization catalyst, we found that the ¹²⁹Xe NMR peak was sensitive to the state of Co on the catalyst surface. This result strongly suggests that ¹²⁹Xe NMR spectroscopy is useful for analysis of the Co-Mo-S phase.

A new approach of biodiesel fuel production from Palm Stearin by ozonolysis process was examined. The ozonized product was evaluated by GC/MS, FT/IR and NMR. The products with low boiling point (hydrocarbons with carbon number from 11 to 17 and a small amount of aldehyde, ketone and free fatty acid) were obtained. The ozonized product can be considered as a suitable alternative fuel in terms of the fuel superior properties.

The role of perovskite-type oxides used as support of nickel catalyst and the lattice oxygen in perovskites in the steam reforming of methane over Ni/perovskite catalyst was investigated employing transient kinetic technique. We confirmed that a part of the lattice oxygen in perovskite were consumed and regenerated readily. and repeatedly under the reaction conditions of steam reforming of methabe. The regenerated lattice oxygen was seemingly active for the oxidation of methane and participates in the oxidation of CHx fragments on metallic Ni, contributing to the suppression of the formation of inactive carbonaceous species causing the deactivation.

We have found that the addition of trace amount of noble metals to Ni catalyst suppressed the hot spot formation with high activity during the oxidative steam reforming of methane. The lower inlet temperature and flatter temperature profile was obtained over bimetallic catalyst prepared by the sequential impregnation. This effective surface modification enhanced the resistance to the oxidation of Ni and made it possible to maintain the metallic state of Ni even in the presence of oxygen. As a result, the reforming reaction proceeded simultaneously with the combustion reaction. The overlap of endothermic region with exothermic region improved the efficiency of heat supply followed by the suppression of hot spot formation.

Nickel-catalyzed decomposition of methane into hydrogen and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) was examined using a thermogravimetric apparatus. The Ni catalyst supported on zirconia synthesized by the glycothermal method gave a high yield of CNT. The initial rate of methane decomposition increased with increasing reaction temperature at 400-680ºC, but decreased with reaction temperature > 700ºC. Raman spectra suggested that CNT formed at higher temperature had more graphite like structure than those obtained at lower temperatures. Feed gas containing methane and hydrogen caused slow deactivation of the catalyst. as a result, CNT yield increased with increasing partial pressure of hydrogen in the feed gas. It was concluded that the rapid deactivation of the catalyst observed when pure methane was fed to the catalyst was caused by decrease in the hydrogen partial pressure in the catalyst bed, which facilitates the development of graphite lays on the catalyst surface.

Acidity and catalytic activity on alkali earth metal cation Y zeolites was studied in order to understand the generation of the strong acidity and its relation with the catatlyci activity. DMol3 was also studied to know the details of the structure of acid sites. On Ca cation exchanged zeolite, Ca²⁺ was stabilized in the sodalite cage, and the cation enhanced the Bronsted acidity in the super cage, thus enhancing the turn-over frequency of octane cracking.

A study was undertaken to know the influence of the pretreatment of a catalyst on the control of the pore-opening size of HZSM-5 for production of selective para xylene formation. On in situ conditions where the ammonium type ZSM-5 was evacuated just before CVD, the pore-opening size was controlled with the deposited Si concentration irrespective of the samples. On the other hand, it depended on the sample in the ex situ conditions where the sample was calcined in a furnace for removal of template molecule, followed by CVD. Discussion will be made on the parameter to affect the difference in the pore-opening size control.

A novel preparation method of supported catalysts have been reported, named as Liquid-phase Reductive Deposition, on which precursor metal complex was first specifically adsorbed on the support surface, followed by heterogeneous nucleation and growth. In contrst, bBy CVRD (Chemical Vapor Reductive Deposition) technique, Ni nanoparticles were reductively deposited onto titania thin film, which was prepared by pulsed laser deposition method with using rutile as a target. Here, we used nickelocene as a precursor and hydrazine as a reducing agent in a vapor phase. Ni nanoparticles were formed through adsorption of nickelocene, reduction by hydrazine, and heterogeneous nucleation of Ni on titania surface and growth. Without hydrazine, no particle was formed. Ni size was controlled by a partial pressure of nickelocene and hydrazine, and reaction time. Formed Ni was characterized as metal by ESCA.
