The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between body/self cathexis and clothing. The subjects were 306 female college students. The subjects completed a questionnaire about body/self cathexis, clothing satisfaction, and proximity of clothing to self. In addition, their body size was measured according to the JIS method.
Factor analysis revealed the factors representing body cathexis and self cathexis separately. The relationship among above factors was also examined. Further analysis showed that the two groups of clothing satisfaction and clothing dissatisfaction differed in body cathexis, self cathexis and body size.
The results of this study, in comparison with the previous study, seem to indicate that clothing satisfaction is compoundly determined by not only clothing attributes but also body/self characteristics, body/self cathexis, and body/self esteem. Implications for the research are discussed.

A calorimetric technique has been devised for measuring the total energy input into washing systems. Using this method, mechanical energy input is measured and related to soil removal and fraying of cloth in a pulsator-type washing machine, using the standard cotton cloth soiled with carbon black. The relationship between mechanical energy input and soil removal, and that between mechanical energy input and fraying of cloth are considered for a number of situations involving variations in bath level, bath ratio and washing time. The summary is as follows:
    1) An assumption is made that the energy input to the cloths corresponds with the energy increase due to the addition of cloths into the washing system. Then the energy increase per unit weight of the cloths decreases with a decrease in bath ratio.
    2) Detergency and fraying of cloth are both determined by the energy increase per unit weight of the cloths, irrespective of bath level, bath ratio or washing time.
    3) A correlation is observed between detergency and the logarithm of fraying of cloth, irrespective of bath level, bath ratio or washing time.
