For assessing the change in colour of textiles in colour fastness tests, a grey scale specified in JIS L 0804 should be used. Colourists visually judge the colour contrast between the treated and untreated fabric against the contrasts of the grey scale. A result by the traditional method based on visual assessment varies from observer to observer.
In this study, we obtained visual assessments with colour change samples prepared systematically as hue, lightness and chroma changes, and analyzed the characteristics of the visual assessments.
On the other hand, because several objective methods through colour measurement have been proposed, we have compared visual assessments with the instrumental assessments. We have also investigated the colorimetric performances of instrumental assessments of change in colour. Especially, we have tried to investigate about the colorimetric performance of CIE94 colour difference formula, which is being tested about its use as a standardisation, and also discussed about the application to the instrumental assessment of change in colour in colour fastness tests through the CIE94 colour difference formula.
