The first purpose of this study is to make clear the contents of“self sought by clothing”and the con-tents of“clothing behavior related to self-presentation”by using young subjects such as undergraduates. And the second purpose is to investigate the influences of sex and psychological variables (some dresser characteristics) on their contents. Major findings obtained are as follows:
    1) 15 items of“self sought by clothing”and 56 items of“clothing behavior related to self-presentation”were made clear.
    2) Three factors of“self sought by clothing”and six factors of“clothing behavior related to self-presentation”were revealed by the factor analysis system.
    3) “Self sought by clothing”and“clothing behavior related to self-presentation”were influenced by sex, self-monitoring and other-consciousness.

The purpose of this study is to examine affective states in evaluating the conformity between suits worn by women of about twenty years old and three types of wearing scenes, i.e., a wedding reception party, a desk work office, and a banquet. Female university students participated in the experiment. Female students have examined the feelings in evaluating the conformity among thirty samples, which were composed of the suits worn by about twenty years old women, and three types of wearing scenes. The feelings and conformity have been evaluated at five levels, and evaluated values were analyzed by using t-test, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. As a result, female students had the strongest feelings (positive and negative) in evaluating conformity of the situation that wears the suits in a desk work office. It was found that the feelings in evaluating the conformity were composed of two factors: “the stress”and“the pleasant feeling”. And also, the relationship was clarified between the evaluation of the conformity and the feelings.

Impressions, received by subjects, of traditional and untraditional yukatas (traditional Japanese in-formal summer costume) have been investigated and images have been compared between first and second sights. Subjects consist of women classified into three age-groups. The stimuli consist of 12 types of yukatas. Subjects expressed their images of each stimulus in five stages for 18 adjective pairs, and the same survey was repeated after an interval of one month. Results of a factor analysis of each group showed that the contribution ratio of the primary factors indicating a traditional or untradi-tional image were 54-65%, and those of the secondary factor indicating a light or heavy image were 21-30%. Older subjects tended to respect traditional yukatas. For many stimuli, every group tended to respect“old-fashioned”, “dislikeable”, and“manly”factors at the second sight rather than at the fir-st sight. In addition, the information transmission was calculated. The older the subjects, the more the information transmission. Then, older subjects might discriminate the differences among the images. At the second sight, the information transmission decreased in all the groups for most of 18 adjective pairs.

In order to solve the structure of university students' concern about make-up, practice of make-up, and expectation of make-up for the opposite sex, a questionnaire survey was conducted by 329 university students. The practice, considered to be carried out daily, was classified into those for hair, face and body depending on body parts on which the make up is practiced. In addition, the types of cosmetics are classified into those for care, reversible make-up, irreversible make-up and fragrance. Twenty-six items featuring each characteristic are set up. The main-ingredients analysis has revealed that the structure different in make-up concern, make-up practice, and make-up expectation for the opposite sex between male and female. Moreover, the relationship among make-up concern, make-up practice and make-up expectation for the opposite sex became clear with correlation analysis.

In order to solve factors, which specify university students' concern about make-up, practice o up for the opposite sex, self-consciousness and gender role. The analysis has revealed that public consciousness affects concern about make-up, practice of make-up, and expectation of make-up for the opposite sex. Male students who are higher in male nature tend to be more active in make-up concern and practice of make up, although in existing studies, higher in female nature have been reported to be more active in make-up concern and practice of make up.

A questionnaire survey has been conducted of 109 female university students and their 107 mothers for the following two purposes:
    1) A survey of the relationship between inside/outside sophistication and clothing/sophistication practices in order to discuss the validity of constructive concept indicated in the article, “Two Aspects of Sophistication Practices”by Hashimoto and Kashio, 2003.
    2) A survey of the relationship between inside/outside sophistication and the mental health as well as the relationship between the sense of sophistication value in the elder age and the mental health.
Concerning the results of 1) and 2), a comparison has been made between students and their mothers. A comparative result has confirmed the constructive validity of these two aspects of sophistication. That is to say, younger females devote themselves to outside sophistication more than elder females do. On the contrary, elder females devote themselves to inside sophistication more than younger females do. In the younger generation, authors have found that outside sophistication is positively correlated with good self-mental health and inside sophistication is negatively correlated with bad others-mental health. By contrast, in the elder generation, only negative correlation has been found between inside sophistication and bad self-and others-mental health. In addition, younger females who devote themselves more to outside sophistication find more value in sophistication of elder age. Elder females who devote themselves more to inside sophistication find more value in sophistication of elder age.

This study aims to examine the structures of coping strategy of purchase, wear and disuse in the sequence of clothing behaviours as well as individual differences in coping strategy.
The concrete originality device actions of the purchase, wearing and disuse of clothes were collected by an open questionnaire survey to two hundred and forty-four man and woman university students. The contents of the description were analyzed by using the quantification -III.
As a result, three axes were found in each structures of coping strategy of purchase, wear and disuse of clothes. Then, the features of the group at the point of purchase, wear and disuse of clothes were examined with a cluster analysis based on the sample score. As a result, it was possible to clas-sif y the group into three clusters in purchasing and wearing, and into four clusters in disuse of clothes. Especially, differences in coping strategy of disuse of clothes have been found by examining the clus-ter from the view point of fashion attitudes and the clothes expense. The students, who are highly concerned about fashion and wish to adopt fashion positively without spending much money in pur-chasing clothes, tend to buy inexpensive clothes at a grand sale and to wear carefully and to throw away at the time of disuse.
