For the purpose of new development of silk to western clothes for men and ladies, the effect of silk on the light reflection was investigated using different yarn size of cocoon from the silkworm,
i.e., Ariake and
Shin-akebono. The light reflection property of the yarn was measured using a gonio-photometer on the series of samples such as raw silk yarn, its degummed silk yarn and twisted yarns (three-and two-ply yarns) before and after degumming. A number of twists is 0, 500, 1, 000 1, 500 and 2, 000 T/m.
1. The intensity of reflected light of silk yarn decreased with increasing of size of silk yarn and was little influenced by the size of cocoon filament yarn.
2. The intensity of reflected light of degummed silk yarn decreased with increasing of a number of twists of raw silk of
Ariake and
Shin-akebono.
3. The degumming treatment of the raw silk and of the twisted silk yarn (three- and two-ply yarns) increased the luster value, because the triangular cross section of silk fibroin appeared. However, the twisted yarn was influenced a little by degumming on the light reflection.
4. The reflection curves of degummed silk yarns were compared with those of two kind of polyester yarn, one of which is triangle in cross-section and the other is circular. It was found that the silk yarns might have graceful luster and the other polyester fibers might have intensive luster.
