We developed four types of body silhouette scales to assess body images during childhood and puberty. To create the scale, data based on four hundred and seventy four photographs of young girls, ranging in age between 6 and 18 , collected by WACOAL HOLDINGS CORP. over the past thirty years in Japan, were used. Silhouettes were generated, based on the regression analysis with nodes of pattern vector in a two-dimensional body shape model as a dependent variable, BMI/Rohrer index as predictors, in each of four age brackets based on the categories used by Ministry of Education. The four types of silhouette scales, Japanese-Body Silhouette Scale Type-II, III, IV and V, correspond to students in senior and junior high school and to pupils in older and younger elementary school, respectively, and the silhouettes show changes in body shape from thinness to obesity.
