The aim of this study was to investigate the impression of volleyball uniform coIours from the perspective of viewers. The study began with the questionnaire survey in order to find the attention of viewers to uniforms. Another questionnaire survey was also conducted to collect words which people usually used for describing the impressions of volleyball uniforms. The psychophysical experiments were then carried out to scale the impressions of the uniform colours using static images of the uniforms and applying the SD method. In the experiment, an image of colour when a single uniform's image was presented to the subjects was compared with that when two different uniforms' images were presented at the same time. The experimental results indicated some distinct features such as the impression that a black uniform tended to give the impressions of “plain”, “dull”, “heavy”, “dark”, “strong” and “stylish”. A red uniform gave the impression of “hot”. AIso, it was found that the impression of two uniforms in a real volleyball scene can be predicted from the individual impressions of a single uniform. Furthermore, the factor analyses of the results suggested that “value” and “colour attribute” were the key for the assessment of the uniform colour. Additionally, some experimental data was evaluated using the four colour emotion models. A few impressions agreed with the model predictions, but not agreed with all of the impressions evaluated in this experiment.
