    The anodization of aluminum at high current densities in acid baths known as causes a concentration of anodic current at certain points on the Al surface ‘burning’. It was found that in an oxalic acid bath, the film thickness at the start of the burning (db) and the applied current density (i) can be related by db=A/i where A is a constant. Based on this equation, a new high speed anodization process has been developed, In which after initial galvanostatic anodization at a high current density, anodic current is decreased with time to prevent burning. Theoretical equations for changing the current density as a function of anodization time were derived from above the equation. Experimental results using an automatic power supply that controlled anodic current in accordance with the theoretical equations demonstrated that thick anodic oxide films could be formed rapidly on aluminum without burning and that the films formed had Hv hardness values as high as 400-450.

    Quantitaive evaluation was made on the effect on the color of titanium nitride films prepared by the hollow cathode discharge (HCD) process of the addition of various gases including hydrocarbon, oxygen, hydrogen and ammonia to nitrogen gas during deposition. An intergrating sphere with specular cap was used as the optical instrument. CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates as defind by JISZ 8701 and the Munsell Renotation system as defined by JISZ 8721 were employed to indicate film color. Film color changed to reddish and both Munsell value and chroma decreased with the addition of either methane or acetylene, but the effect of acetylene was the stonger. X-ray analysis showed that the carbon content of titanium nitride film depend upon the quantity of hydrocarbon gas added to nitrogen gas, and carbon atoms in the film played an important role in its color. The addition of oxygen decreased Munsell value, and the hue turned reddish. The addition of hydrogen had no significant effect on hue and value but decreased chroma. The addition of ammonia gave color almost the same effect as did hydrogen and large amount of ammonia produced and increased in chroma. It is concluded that the color of titanium nitride film is mainly depended upon the amount of gas atoms that it contains.

    The effects of the addition of inorganic powders (tin, lead, zinc, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium dioxide, iron oxide and mica) in PVC coatings on the durability of PVC coated steel sheet were studied. The durability of the PVC coatings was estimated by meaurement of photo-oxidative degradation, stress shrinkage and the invasion of corrosive materials. It was found that: 1) the addition of flaked powders to coatings reduced heat shrinkage and the rate of water vapor transmission to 50-80% of that standard specimens, while the addition of copper, zinc and iron oxide powders had adverse effects on resistance to heat and light; 2) the addition of flaked powders to coatings provided better adhesive strength after aging tests and superior corrosion resistance during cycle tests, which was relative to the results of heat shrinkage and water vapor transmission rate; 3) the addition of more than 10phr of aluminum flaked powder to the coatings gave excellent durability.

    The electron spin resonance (ESR) method was employed to predict the weatherability of steel plate coated with polyvinylchloride (PVC) composite, and the change of electron level in the PVC was studied immediately after UV irradiation. ESR results showed that it was closely related to degradation of samples by sunshine weather-meter irradiation. The durability of PVC can be estimated by the quantity of radicals produced by the absorption of radiant energy. The inhibiting effect of metal stearates, organotin compounds and iron oxide pigments on the degradation of PVC is predicted fairly accurately in short time by the application of ESR method.

    The grinding performance and service life of electrodeposited diamond grinding wheels are affected by many factors. In this report, the effects of the ratio of electrodeposited depth (ED) to mean diamond grain size (GS) are discussed. The ratio at which the wheel shows optimum performance and life is determind when the ratio ED/GS is defind as
    ED/GS=RD×TD/GS×100
    where RD=rate of electrodeposition
    TD=deposition time
    In the expeperiment 53-ED-1 synthetic diamond made by Tomei Diamond Co. was used and grain size distribution was from 88μm to 105μm. The wheel body was of a cup shapes, and the electrolyte was a Watt's bath. Grinding experiment showed that the optimum ratio lies between 70 and 80 per cent.

    The current distribution at a cathode arranged symmetrically between two anodes in a beaker was studied as a function of the volume of the beaker and the size or position of the electrodes by the facsimile paper method. In a small beaker with a short cathode-to-anode distance, cathodic current distribution was affected by the size and position of the anode, but in a large beaker there was scarecely any effect. An auxiliary cathode improved the cathodic current distribution, but this produced a large energy loss due to current leakage to the auxiliary electrode. The effect of current shield plate on the current distribution at cathode was extremely complex, requiring considerable trial and error using the facsimile paper to get uniform cathodic current distribution.
