    Research and development work on cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries has been reviewed with particular emphasis on battery systems using electro-deposited conducting polymers. The general features of Li+-intercalation compounds and anion-doping conducting polymers are described in the light of their application to in lithium cells, and the criteria for lithium/polymer cells are then summarized to allow appropriate material selection. Examples are also introduced to show of how electro-polymerizing affects the electrochemical properties of deposited polypyrrole film and the charge-discharge performances of Li/LiClO4/polypyrrole battery. In addition, a technique for the optimization of electrochemical properties of polypyrrole has been suggested, along with a method of morphology orientation using insulating NBR films.

    Recent work regarding LB membranes and especially their electronic properties is reviewed.
    The combination of heat-resistance and high mechanical strength of LB membranes are essential to their practical application in electronic devices, and therefore the versatillity of high Tg polymer LB membranes is emphasized. Discussion is focused on poly (dialkyl) fumarates, and their FA characteristics, LB formation and the capacitance or tunneling currents of the ITO/LB/Al-type MIM cell are explained.

    The anodization of SUS 430 stainless steel was studied in 5kmolm-3 NaOH solution at 298K and 353K, and a color film was found to be formed on the stainless steel in the transpassive potential region. Impedance was measured at frequencies ranging from 10KHz to 1mHz to evaluate the kinetic mechanism of film formation at several potentials. It was found that impedance characteristics changed with anodic potential in the steady state. The impedance diagram showed a capacitive loop in the high-frequency region and an inductive loop in the low-frequency region. A capacitive loop or a straight line response similar to Warburg impedance was seen at lower frequencies when the anodic potential became to more positive than the transpassive potential. It was considered that the high-frequency response was caused by charge transfer and the low-frequency response by the diffusion of FeO2-in a diffusion layer or the adsorption of some intermediate species. It was observed that the film formed on the surface of stainless steel had excellent coloration, and it was concluded that the transpassive reaction had an importance on the formation of the color film.

    A study was conducted to improve the characteristics of anodic coatings on aluminum by the pulse current with negative current component. Anodic oxidation was carried out in a bath of 15 wt % H2SO4, the reversing cycle was set at 13.3Hz and duty factors was varied from 76 to 100%.
    It was found that the hardness, coating ratio and thickness of coatings were improved dramatically by the pulse current with negative current component at duty factors of 86-95%. Uniform coatings were obtained at higher temperatures (around 30°C) and it was found that anodizing coatings grew at a higher rate at current densities of 2-6A/dm2. The cells of coatings obtained by the pulse current with negative current component were uniform and small in size.

    Electrolytic preparation of V2O5 was studied using VOSO4 as a starting material in acidic solution. Cyclic voltammograms for VOSO4 in the pH range of 1.3 to 2.3 showed a reversible anodic and cathodic peak at about 0.3 to 0.1V vs. Hg/Hg2SO4. Anodic and cathodic peak potentials depended on the pH of the solution. A plot of cathodic peak potentials against pH showed a linear relationship with a slope of 0.171V/pH. This was nearly equal to the theoretical value of 0.1767V/pH at 24°C, corresponding to the electrode reaction,
    V2O5+6H++2e=2VO2++3H2O
    The oxidation products obtained by constant-potential electrolysis at or near peak potential was found by elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction patterns to be amorphous V2O5 giving one broad peak at about 2θ=26°. X-ray diffraction patterns of the oxidation product heated to above 300°C in an air and nitrogen atmosphere agreed with those of V2O5. Inspection by SEM showed that the surface of the product was spongy in structure.

    The reaction of electroless nickel deposition using sodium hypophosphite as a reducing agent was studied by means of an ion chromatograph equipped with a conductivity detector. Bath compositions were NiCl2⋅6H2O of 30g/L, NaH2 PO2⋅H2O of 10g/L and Na3C6H5O7⋅2H2O of 10g/L (pH 4-6) or of 100g/L (pH 8-10). Initially, the most preferable analytical conditions were examined using two eluent systems such as citric acid and tartaric acid. In these conditions, 5mM citric acid (pH 2.85) was the most suitable eluent for the separation of phosphate, phosphorous and hypophosphorous ion. In actual plating baths, phosphate ion was not detected in sodium citrate bath at pH 4-6 or pH 8-10. The added hypophosphorous ion decreases correspondingly with increasing phosphorus ion and deposited nickel. Hydrolysis of hypophosphorous ion to phosphorous ion and hydrogen proceeds smoothly in the presence of nickel metal, which acts as the surface catalyst. The effective utility ratio for addition of hypophosphorous acid was about 32-35% for pH 4-6 and about 8-13% for pH 8-10. Therefore, it can be considered that the remaining hypophosphorous ion was converted to phosphorous ion and hydrogen by hydrolysis.

    An in situ PAS (Photoacoustic spectroscopy) technique has been used to study the plating of copper. Periodic pressure fluctuations induced by the thermal changes in the working electrodes were detected with a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The signal from the PZT was amplified by a lock in technique. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used as ex situ method for monitoring of the plated surface and simplified external reflectance technique was used as another in situ method for it. The surface structures of the plated copper under different current densities were in situ monitored by using PAS technique. The changes of the PA signal amplitude indicate the surface structure, whether the surface is flat or uneven. In the latter part of this report, the smoothing effect of a brightener was checked by using the above technique and we also tried to investigate the mechanism of brightening effect.
    Therefore, this method is thought to be applicable to the in situ monitoring of the copper plated surface.

    The separation of lead (II) and zinc (II) in plating baths was performed with silica-titania gel by means of column operation. Peculiarities were observed in the adsorption behavior of zinc (II) in the initial stage, and they are discussed in relation to the sodium ion as the adsorption site on the gel. It was found that both species of metal ions adsorbed were completely eluted with nitric acid, and that the gel could then be reused repeatedly.

    Two-step anodization was used to form an anodized layer on a sputtered aluminum thin film on a glass substrate.
    The voltage-current characteristics of the anodized layer depended on substrate temperature at the time of aluminum film formation. Aluminum and oxygen profiles of the anodized layer obtained by Auger analysis and Ar ion etching showed that there was a transition layer from metal to oxide and the thickness of the layer depended on the substrate temperature.

    Eight kinds of Al-Zn alloys with Zn concentrations ranging from 5.5 to 94wt% were made on a laboratory scale. Measurements of certain mechanical properties in the atmosphere and of corrosion potentials in 3% NaCl solution, as well as surface composition analysis were carried out on as-cast ingots of the above alloys. It was concluded that the alloy containing 32wt% Zn had peculiar properties.

    TiN films with Oxygen contents of 0.8-8.5 at% were prepared by ion plating at negative substrate bias voltage, and their properties were investigated. The hardness of the films increased with increases in their Oxygen content, but no specific influence wass observed on the surface morphology or spectral reflectance of the films.
