Electrolytic preparation of V
2O
5 was studied using VOSO
4 as a starting material in acidic solution. Cyclic voltammograms for VOSO
4 in the pH range of 1.3 to 2.3 showed a reversible anodic and cathodic peak at about 0.3 to 0.1V vs. Hg/Hg
2SO
4. Anodic and cathodic peak potentials depended on the pH of the solution. A plot of cathodic peak potentials against pH showed a linear relationship with a slope of 0.171V/pH. This was nearly equal to the theoretical value of 0.1767V/pH at 24°C, corresponding to the electrode reaction,

The oxidation products obtained by constant-potential electrolysis at or near peak potential was found by elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction patterns to be amorphous V
2O
5 giving one broad peak at about 2θ=26°. X-ray diffraction patterns of the oxidation product heated to above 300°C in an air and nitrogen atmosphere agreed with those of V
2O
5. Inspection by SEM showed that the surface of the product was spongy in structure.
