Thermal capacity under the floor with insulated foundation can be utilized as one of the source of thermal absorption in summer. This study shows the simulation results of quantity of thermal absorption on an earth floor concrete that are calculated by the cylindrical coordinates model. Quantity of thermal absorption is estimated to be about 4〜6 W/m^2 in Hokkaido and Tohoku area and it is about twice as large as one by insulated floor.

This paper reports on the results of winter thermal/luminous environmental measurements of a glass construction, Multipurpose Hall. Thermal environmental measurement and PMV calculation of the gymnasium and the multipurpose hall during winter. And the luminous environment of this building during winter The floor of the gymnasium is laid underground but the accompanying gallery which is the viewing space is on the first floor level. With single plate glass for all the walls of this gallery, natural lighting is effectively used. The optical environment referring both to illumination and luminosity was evaluated.

This study aims to investigate the indoor environment in an office with large windows in cold regions. The subject of this study is the thermal environment and the change in occupancy rate & the energy consumption at floors. By this study, it was found out that this office is roughly comfortable. Moreover, the relation between occupancy rate and energy consumption suggested a possibility to save energy. The button-shaped thermo sensor-loggers used in these measurements enabled easily measuring multipoint environment of office floors in operation.

This paper is reported about the temperature field measurement data of three food stores by use of kerosene heat pump (KHP) to air-conditioning systems in Hokuriku District (Ishikawa prefecture). In medical facilities, the use of ceiling radiant cooling system has expanded. This report aims to clarify the characteristic of the ceiling radiation panel and the ceiling radiant cooling system. As a result, it was clarified the rise of 1℃ according to change from the minimum load condition to the maximum load condition. And in all experimental condition, as for absolute volume of PMV, the Radiant Cooling System was smaller than the case of the Convection Cooling System. As for SET*, it was shown that there was no difference between the Radiant Cooling system and the Convection Cooling System.

Performance tests were conducted to clarify the effectiveness of the Ceiling Radiant Heating and Cooling Systems in summer and winter at a university where the Ceiling Radiant Systems are used. The winter survey result of the ceiling radiant air conditioning system which installed to a library is reported. The indoor thermal environment by the radiant panel was very stable with the synergistic effect by the high thermal storage performance of the concrete slab. The temperature of the floor surface was rised by the radiant panel. The valve of MRT at the radiation panel operating term was 1.0℃ higher than the valve at the stop term.

We measured again by the lower supply water temperature to the radiant panel based on the pre- report result. We verified the thermal comfort of stable operation, the warming up performance at the day next closure day and the amount of consumption energies. It became clear that the optimal temperature to the panel at heating term was 26℃ for this institution.

PMV and SET^* have been successfully utilized to estimate the thermal environments in offices with rather uniform air temperature and radiation field. However, residential buildings tend to be asymmetric in thermal environments. It is necessary to adequately predict the human comfort by taking account of asymmetries of thermal environments. In this study, thermo-regulation model 'JOS' is integrated with the simulation of convection and radiation. The coupled simulation is carried out for estimating the thermal comfort of a floor-heating system and a wall-mounted air-conditioning unit.

This study was carried out in order to construct a method to predict thermal sensation and airflow distribution in the floor-heating room. This paper presents the CFD simulation using the High or Low-Reynolds-Number κ-ε models or V2F model with the heating floor. The CFD simulation results show moderate agreement with the experiment for airflow distribution and temperature distribution in the floor-heating room.

The experiment was conducted in order to clarify influences of outdoor air supplied through openings on thermal environment in rooms heated by floor heating systems. The ari supply openings of various heights and types were used in respective experiment cases. The following results were obtained: (1) Draught Rating (DR) was increased by sypplied outdoor air in any heights of air supply openings and openings with natural ventilation systems. The DR in areas near the air supply openings were higher than DR in far area. (2) Influences of outdoor air supplied through openings in the heights of more than 1600mm above floor were small on thermal environment. (3) The air supply openings with mechanical ventilaion systems made better thermal temperature than openings with natural ventilation systems because mechanical ventilaion systems controled temperatures of supply air.

By the revision of the Building Standard Law of japan in 2003, it is now becoming mandatory to install mechanical ventilation systems in all habitable rooms. Outdoor air delivered from air supply terminal can cause cold draft in rooms during winter season. Numerical prediction of indoor environment in floor heating type room by CFD was successfully performed of an experimental room through comparison with observation and a series of simulation was carried out on cases where the conditions such as type and installation position of air supply terminal, installation area ratio of floor heating system, room configuration, etc were changed. An index to represent cold draft potential was proposed and applied for comparisons of resultant indoor thermal environment.

For car production, useful method to predict the thermal comfort and cooling load for car cabin is strongly required today. The purpose of this study is to develop suitable simulation system. A subjective experiment was conducted in winter to acquire the data for simulation. In the experiment, The temperatures of inner surface, outer surface, room air of a compact truck, and other climatic conditions were recorded. In the simulation, thermal network calculating program, NETS was used. NETS was updated for car simulation. The climatic conditions were input in NETS and the results of the calculation were compared with the results of the experiment. Both results accorded generally together. This result suggests that thermal network modeling could be useful method to predict thermal condition of car cabin.

In this study, we tried to develop a numerical model evaluating thermal radiant environment in the kitchen in an unsteady manner analyzing a three-dimensional heat transfer by convection, thermal radiation and conduction. The algorithm which enables to analyze the heat transfer by thermal radiation with high accuracy developed by authors is built into the model. We compared analyzed results such as the temporal variation of surface temperature on a wall around the IH cooking heater and gas range with experimental ones when the water was boiled and examined the verification of the model.

We proposed the totalized hydrogen energy management system that consists of a fuel cell device, a water electrolysis device, and metal hydride tanks, and developed the numerical analysis model of the tank. The discharging hydrogen performance was investigated experimentally. As results, the design condition to keep the prescribed flow rate of hydrogen, the utilized metal hydride ratio of 80%, and the cold water of 7℃ was obtained. From the comparison between experimental results and calculated results, it was conformed that the model is applicable to the design technology of the tank. Moreover, operational conditions of the system were evaluated on PCT-diagram.

To realize a desirable building environment by saving energy and low global emission, the authors have been investigating passive systems in buildings where the environment is controlled biomimetically and autonomously by simulating the physiological functions of human and other organisms. An environmental harmonized 'biomimetic building', which simulates the environment physiology mechanism of a human body and human wisdom for environment symbiosis, has been developed. This paper describes the regional variation of thermal effect of the building whose roof and wall surfaces can, depending on the season, autonomously change their thermal characteristics, such as absoptivity and emissivity.

In order to facilitate rational development on the efficient new ventilation system with new detectors against the health problems caused by VOCs in the residential buildings, authors studied to clarify the actual IAQ conditions around occupied area. To grasp the contemporary circumstances and transfer-mechanisms of VOCs in houses, the actual data regarding the pollutants and its movement are collected in 9 detached houses in Kanto district. Most interesting trend is significant drop of average concentration of formaldehyde. And steady appearance of alternative chemicals such as various carbonyls, and frequent observation of unexpected TVOC value over 400μg/m^3 are discussed.

In this paper investigated results for indoor thermal environment, ventilation and indoor chemical pollutants in 9 detached houses in Tochigi prefecture is described. A composition ratio of VOCs and its characterization are analyzed. The results of 9 houses in Tochigi prefecture were compared with that of the past national wide research. As a result, daily fluctuation of indoor temperature was comparatively large and CO_2 concentration was high in some of investigated houses. Comparing two constructions between Japanese conventional method and 2×4 method, each characterization of indoor air pollutions was cleared. Characterization of indoor chemical pollutions in 9 houses in Tochigi prefecture was similar with that of the past national wide research.

It is necessary that we measure and predict a chemical contaminant in a room in advance, because human health is influenced by a chemical contaminant that is exposed in the long term. However, a chemical analysis by HPLC and GC/MS has difficult matters like as concentration analysis, high cost etc.. In this paper, we examine possibility of formaldehyde measurement with a contaminant detection sensor by fungi. We evaluate a growth rate of fungi as biosensor by an ultraviolet and visible rays spectroscope.

Multiple chemical sensitive patients bring on allergic symptoms caused by chemical substances from architectural materials. But, the causative substances of allergic symptom vary from person to person. It is not appropriate to evaluate architectural materials only by chemical emissions. In this study, the new measurement method of evaluating odor intensity and acceptability was devised and some architectural materials were evaluated by odor. After that, on the purpose of making comparison between the odor evaluation of materials and that of residences, the resident's perception and the indoor air quality of houses using Akita cedar were measured.

Japanese Industrial Standards A 1901: Small chamber method have been established in January 2003 for the precise measurement from building materials. However, it is difficult to measure chemical emission rate from liquid glue in the same way as on many another building material such as plywood. In this study, the new measurement method was developed of the method are shown in this paper. A glue was sealed between silica calcium board in this method. It was found that this method is superior to reproducible result and examine an attenuation characteristic in real space.

High airtightness of recent houses causes insufficient ventilation or pollution of indoor air. Due to The Building Standards Law in Japan revised in July 2003, installation of ventilation equipment has been obliged in each house. Consequently, it is important that ventilation equipment is working as planned. In this study, field survey on ventilation rate of indoor air was done by using PFT (Perfluorocarbon Tracer Gas) method in three of detached houses with mechanical ventilation system. Experimental tests for ventilation rates were conducted with 4 measurement methods under differential pressure conditions set by 4 conditions, in the experimental multi-family residential building that equipped with pressure control chambers. Under 1.0 ACH, the result values gained from 4 measurement methods resulted in slight differences and under 0.5 ACH were in good agreement. As a result, under a disturbance condition the availability of PFT method for ventilation rate was verified.

CO_2 gas is tested about its accuracy as a tracer gas for evaluating ventilation characteristics, comparing with SF6 gas, which can provide accurate measurement, but has high GWP and is avoided to use recently. In this paper, test results about CO_2 gas adsorption on the sampling tubes made of soft plastics or fluorine coated tube so-called Teflon tube is reported that at the normal condition and measuring system, serious problem was not found. and CO_2 gas experiment was not less accurate than SF_6.

The VOC removal chemical filter for ceiling cassette type air conditioner is developed. This paper illustrates appliance of developed filter at newly-built school classroom for 24 days and measurement results of VOC removal efficiency. Experiment results are shown below; 1) Indoor VOC concentration is immediately reduced when ceiling cassette type air conditioners are operated. Many type of VOC are detected, but examination shows that the filter has about 80〜90% VOC removal efficiency. 2) Removal efficiency of formaldehyde is lower than that of VOC. 3) VOC removal efficiency is lasted and hardly changed for experimment periods(24 days).

The sick building syndrome is a serious and social problem to be solved. We need effective countermeasure products to indoor chemical pollution. The domestic air cleaner is expected as one of the noted technologies or products. We've already determined the removal rates of the domestic air cleaners by the pollutant constant emission test and also indicated that this product at the initial operation periods was effective as a countermeasure against the problem. However, the studies related to the durability of the domestic air cleaners have not been reported. In this study, the durability of the domestic air cleaners was investigated and determined with use of the apparatus exposed to the contaminant. Results showed that Clean Air Delivery Rate(CADR) or ECAR on ethylbenzene at the initial operation was 72.4[m^3/h], however, in the case of exposed one was decreased to 54.2[m^3/h].

In clean rooms reduced the number of fan filter units (FFUs) for energy saving, the cleanliness level of the rooms may be reduced by the retention zone below the shut-off panels. This report describes characteristics of a ceiling-return system using ventilation resistor panels to return retention air to the ceiling chamber. The height of the retention zone is determined by ventilation resistor panel surface area and the ratio of inlet wind speed from the ventilation resistor to the outlet wind speed from the FFUs.

A clean room with a ceiling-return system using ventilation resistor panels returns a proportion of the air in the retention zone at the ventilation resistor panels to the ceiling chamber. In doing so, a system shrinks the retention zone while simultaneously lowering dust concentration in that zone. This paper presents results on the extent of the impact of the ventilation resistor panels, the relationship between outlet wind speed from the fan filter unit, inlet wind speed from the ventilation resistor panels, and dust concentration of the retention zone, and the recovery characteristics of dust concentration below the ventilation resistor panels and below the shut-off panels.

A new control system is described for the solution of the contamination problems in case of door usage in a clean room. When a door opens in a clean room, the room pressure could not be held at the setting value. If conventional pressure control is applied, air currents go back and forth, and are mixed. In our system a constant air flow is formed in the doorway. So the risk of contamination will be kept away. Another problem is occurred when the door is closed in conventional control system. While door being opened, the higher side damper is closed, and the lower side damper is opened wide. So at the moument of the door closed, in the higher pressure room the air supplied becomes superfluous. In the lower pressure room air runs short greatly, an air current is inhaled from an unexpected opening. In our system, at the moment of the door operation, the air flow balance is kept stable, so the pressure and the air flow change smoothly under control.

We introduced the new technique, which is called Hybrid Control, for the solution of the contamination problems in case of door usage in a clean room in the previous paper. In this paper, it is shown that pressure difference between two rooms changes smoothly when the door is opened, or is closed. And also shown that a constant air flow is formed in the doorway by air flow visualization and particle measurement.

We proposed a new dry cleaning for air filters, particularly chemical filters, by using supercritical carbon dioxide. The regeneration of chemical filter media loaded with diethyl phthalate and toluene were investigated in terms of the breakthrough curve after cleaning at various cleaning conditions. The recovery of filter media loaded with diethyl phthalate and toluene were higher 90 % in some suitable temperature and pressure conditions. And, we investigated cleaning performance for not only single component gas but also multicomponent gases. The recovery of filter media adsorbed various gases were higher 99 % at the pressure from 10 to 20 MPa and the temperature of about 45℃.

A model of multicomponent adsorption kinetics proposed in the previous report has been corrected. In single component adsorption equilibrium, this new model is theoretically conformed of Dubinin-Astakhov(DA) equation. In adsorption equilibrium of binary mixture, we obtained the good coincidence with simulated values and measured values. Moreover, we have validated this model by comparing simulated and measured adsorption breakthrough curve. The predicting accuracy is almost satisfactory. However, the removal efficiency of some compounds are overestimated. We can consider that this overestimation is due to neglect of intra-pore mass transfer resistance.

In this paper, we verified effects of the renovation for a comfortable indoor air quality from the mixing system to the swirling induction type displacement system, so-called SWIT at a print factory, which has large cooling loads and infiltration air volumes. As results, the SWIT could reduce ca. 35% energy consumption within the set value of temperature and concentration of volatile organic compounds in the occupied zone on comparing with the mixing system. Furthermore, the SWIT could protect the direct diffusion of higher temperature infiltration air toward the occupied zone, because of the buoyancy effect.

This research examines the thermal environment and the air quality of the work area in the machine factory with a large space. In this paper, a blow air characteristic of the local air-conditioning and a thermal effect on the worker were examined. Three diffusers that the characteristic is different was measured and CFD analysis. We showed in the measurement, the relation between the distance and the temperature, velocity on the blow side. And In CFD analysis, it simulated on the condition of based on the measurement result, and the characteristic of a blow air was shown. The SET* calculated based on the CFD analysis and the SET* calculated based on the measurement was compared. Both roughly approximated, and showed the utility of the expectation by the CFD analysis.

We can make the best use of outdoor air for facilities with higher cooling loads as an electric power room. In this paper, we discussed effective methods to reduce the energy consumption of the HVAC system for an electric power room based on some case studies by using of the CFD. As results, we recognized that the Swirling induction type displacement system makes the best energy saving one for an electric power room. Furthermore, we obtained ca. 90% energy reduction on the comparison of the package air-conditioning system with the faster supply air and exhaust air from the lower level.

Field survey on thermal environment was carried out in railway stations during the summer 2005. Air temperature was generally higher than outdoors, and low air velocity in concourses caused thermal environmental degradation. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses were executed to clarify the airflow characteristics in details and to improve the situation. It was found that adequate outdoor wind introduction have potential improvement of thermal comfort at concourse.

Based on the field survey on thermal environment in railway stations during summer of 2005, the thermal environmental simulation for the station in summer was carried out by use of a thermal and airflow network model. Various thermal problems are found in the station in summer, and thus several countermeasures ware estimated and examined in the thermal environmental simulation. As a result, these countermeasures were effective, especially in improvement of radiation. According to the simulation amount of time which stayers tolerate the environment in summer increases 10% more in case the all these countermeasures are used.

A building air-conditioning system is conventionally operated under different set-points which are not almost changed through a year. Optimization tool automatically changed these set-points from the point of view of electric consumption and thermal comfort. In the optimization, the thermal load prediction is needed and calculated by using the predictions of weather and internal heat generation. In this paper, the prediction method for internal heat generation is proposed. Then the prediction accuracy is examined by using simulation.

The predicted error margin is one of the problems for optimizing air-conditioning operation. Therefore, we have examined the relations between optimization effects and quantity of the error margin for the first phase. As quantity of the error margin gets larger, the effect of optimization gets smaller and we obtained an opposite effect when quantity of the error margin was quite large. And then we proposed an optimization method that considers error margin, and verified its effect. The stability of the optimization was improved using the proposed method and it revised the slant of the predicted thermal load.

Energy conservation in the architectural fields is now essential against the increasing of the world-wide interest in the environment preservation on the Earth. In this study, the newly optimal design method for building and urban energy system is proposed and also its applicability is analyzed by way of simple case study. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is adopted for this optimization. This method has two optimization steps, equipment capacity and system operation, and these optimizations are calculated simultaneously. The results show that the proposed method has probability of applicability to more complex energy system with proper improvement.

Water-cooled packaged air-conditioning systems are reevaluated in terms of alleviating the heat island phenomenon in cities and effectively utilizing building rooftops. Up to now, such reliability assessment has been insufficient, and this has limited the use of this kind of air-conditioning system in the information and communications sectors that demand a high standard of reliability. This work has led to the development of a model for evaluating the reliability of water-cooled packaged air-conditioning systems. The model clarifies the behavior of air-conditioning systems when they fail, and quantitatively assesses the reliability of air-conditioning systems based on the redundancy and number of partitions of cooling towers. These results will be very useful for designing water-cooled packaged air-conditioning systems based on reliability.
