In order to investigate the relationship between the printing paper and ink, the authors suggested the following method.
Cut the printed matter into small pieces and paste one of them between elder-trees which has been divided into two parts, then dry completely.
After complete drying it is cut into slices from 0.0015 mm to 0.0020 mm in thickness by means of a sliding microtome.
The thin slices of elder-tree are spreaded on deck glass by aid of one drop of xylol and sealed with Canada-balsam carefully.
The microphotographs of the specimens of the cross sections of various printed matters, namely halftone printing on one side coated paper and imitation art paper, gravure printing, letterpress printing on book paper, prepared in this way, are illustrated in the Figures.
