In this report, the authors studied the peeling and blistering phenomena of the traffic car refinished films by microscopical observations of interface of films stripped from the car.
As the results, the peeling and blistering of the refinished films were caused as the followings :
(1) Disappearance of sanding traces on the primer surfacer.
(2) Presence of void on the sanded surface of putty or primer surfacer.
(3) More peeling or blistering found with the combination of the nitrocellulose lacquer type under- coat/urethane-alkyd enamel.
Such failures as the peeling and blistering were caused by poor intercoat adhesion of coated films.
The mechanism of these failures was considered with the coating process.
