The reaction between styrene and pigments was carried out by gas phase method and ampoule method.
The pigments were classified into three groups by their reactivity to styrene as follows.
1. Pigments that do not polymerize styrene ; ultramarine blue
2. Pigments that produce styrene oligomer (MW =2000); kaolinite
3. Pigments that produce polystyrene (MW=300000); iron oxides Styrene oligomer having the molecular weight of 2000 was formed as the result of cation polymerization over kaolinite.
On the other hand, radical polymerization gave birth to the styrene polymer of molecular weight of 300000 over iron oxides and prussian blue.
