Silica-coated carbon black (Si-CB) was prepared by using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and carbon black on which hydroxyl groups were introduced by H
2O plasma treatment (Hy-CB). Hy-CB reacted with TEOS in an aqueous suspension without addition of catalyst. From the results of TEM observation and solid
29 Si-NMR measurement, the formation of Si-CB was confirmed. The formation mechanism of Si-CB was assumed that condensation between TEOS and hydroxyl groups on Hy-CB occured, followed by the hydrolysis of ester bonds in TEOS. This initial reaction, condensation, can be regarded as significant.
