Gas chromatography was employed for the rapid detection of organophosphorus, organochlorine insecticides, such as TEPP, metasystox, methylparathion, malathon, ethyl parathion, EPN, γ-BHC, heptachlor, aldrin, thiodan, dieldrin, DDT and endrin. The used apparatus was Shimadzu Model GC-IB Gas Chromatograph fitted with hydrogen flame ionization detector, SE-30 Column, and we succeeded in quantitative analysis of the insecticides at ca 0.1μg level between 170° to 230°C.

The mixture of nitrofurylacrylamide (NFA), α-furyl-β- (5-nitro-2-furyl) -acrylic acid amide (AF-2) and nitrofurazone (NFS) was analysed separately. NFA, after extracting AF-2 with xylene from the aqueous sample solution, was reacted with NaClO solution and determined at 525mμ. AF-2 extracted with xylene was determined at 405mμ. NFS, after extracting AF-2 with xylene, was reacted with phenylhydrazine and determined at 440mμ. Each of the photometric methods was not interferred by other components. The recoveries of each components were above 95%.

α-Furyl-β- (5-nitro-2-furyl) -acrylic acid amide (AF-2) and nitrofurazone (NFS) in meat products were analysed separately. Nitrofurylacrylamide (NFA) combines with protein. AF-2, after washing the sample with petroleum ether, was extracted with toluene and determined at 395mμ. NFS, after extracting AF-2 with toluene from the sample, was reacted with henylhydrazine and determined at 440mμ. Each of the photometric methods were not interferred by other components. The recoveries of each components were above 70-85%.

Optimal dosage of fumigant, ethylene oxide, was studied, under fundamental experiment and actual environmental conditions. The effect was found to vary according to the amount and the quality of the subject, while the reason of the results being assumed to be due to the difference of gas penetration. It was also concluded that two hundred grams per one and a half cubic meters of the fumigant amount was practically effective against even Bacilli having rather high tolerance, and also against Eumycetes and insect.

There are many methods for testing of the freshness of shellfish, but the organoleptic method has been put into operation in practice, because there are few other practicable methods.
On freshness examination of oysters, we have developed a simple method, requiring about 1 hour for completion and measuring succinic dehydrogenase activity as the vital force in oyster gills using 2, 3, 5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride as indicator (TTC test). We have carried out practical control examination for 3469 samples of oysters and could get good results.
1. In performing this test, the pieces of gill and 2ml of TTC solution are put into tube it is inverted twice, and held at 37°C for 40 minutes.
TTC solution···1: 500 dilution; one portion of TTC in 500 portions of artificial marine water (or 3.4% NaCl), and it is adjusted to pH 6.5
2. Gills were the suitable parts of the oyster body for TTC test.
3. Various normal shellfishes (200 samples, 10 species) have been tested and all of these have indicated positive results by TTC reaction.
4. Oysters which have indicated negative results by TTC test, were in inadequate temperature or stored for a long time, or weakened by fresh water.
5. Among the 3469 samples examined, 3348 were positive and others were negative by TTC test.
