The use of computer controls has already become widespred throughout industrial fields. In such fields, it is desired that control programs are easily and immediately developed and modified. To meet this requirement, we have developed a new type of control system called Rule-Based Control System. In this control system, “IF (conditions)-THEN (conclusions)” rule style is adopted to describe the control logics, becouse it is well suited to the nonprocedural manner of control logics and make it simple to describe them. And, action commands are automatically inferred from system components' states by using production system methodology. To realize real-time control based on this methodology, new mechanisms, (1) a highly flexible process interface mechanism, (2) a high speed inference mechanism and (3) rule verification mechanism have been developed.
Through the applications of the Rule-Based Control System, it has been proven that engieners who does not have skills for programming can easily use the rule-base control and that a step-by-step manner of development in control systems is possible. The number of man-hours for developing control program has been decreased by two-thirds using general purpose programming language.
