In order to measure pH under high pressure, the writers have made a small type Li glass electrode, ca. 6mm. dia., 130mm. long. Electric insulation at the leading terminal from autoclave is necessary to be maintained as high as possible.
The pressure difference between inside and outside the reference electrode was compensated by using the tripple tube that has 0.5-1mm. dia. holes. Both pressure and electric leakages were prevented by means of a small copper guard and teflon packing.
When pH variation of standard buffer solution of various kinds (N.B.S.) was measured under 0 to 70kg/cm
2 pressure of N
2, CO
2 and water gas respectively, considerable variation was observed under CO
2 gas, while no variation occurred under N
2 and water gas. By this method, pH was measured under the pressure up to ca. 100kg/cm
2.
