    The aim of this research is to improve a horizontal resolution of microwave subsurface radar. A back projection histogram method is newly proposed as imaging process from measured waves. This method consists of two phases; imaging process and superposition process. In the imaging process, back projection images are constructed from each reflected wave on concentric circle with center at measurement point. Multiple back projection images are superimposed in the superposition process. Experimental results on two steel pipes detection show that the horizontal resolution is improved by proposed method.

    Recently our chewing number is declined to decrease owing to softening of foodstuffs. That has influence on our health and development of brain cells, especially for children. Receiving the request of a dentist, we developed a chewing number counting equipment that can be used with the easiness like a pedometer. That equipment detects the small expansion of the temporal muscle using a head band with a semiconductor pressure sensor. After practical uses, it was clarified that it has some time for children to attach the equipment at the correct place and some people don't want to attach the head band in their meal time. In this paper, for solving the problems mentioned above, we propose a new type chewing number counting equipment that uses an infrared sensor attached at the temple of one's glasses. The proposed equipment can detect the chewing number without touching one's head and be easily adjusted by changing a sensor load resistor.
    As a result, we could get the counting accuracy with 4.6% errors.

    In the paper, posture sensor units for bipedal robot are proposed combining the posture sensor using mercury, and the gyro. First of all, the signal processing technique to measure the inclination degree with this posture sensor and the method of designing the sensor was described. Next, the signal processing technique for the posture sensor unit that combines this posture sensors with the gyro was described. The inclination degree was measureed using these sensor unit, and the accuracy of measurement was discussed. We could prove the proposed technique usefully.

    This work is concerned with the development of a signal processing algorithms for checkweighers to realize much higher speed of operation and highly accurate measurement of mass of object during crossing a conveyor belt. Continuous measurement means that the masses of discrete objects on a conveyor belt are determined in sequence. Checkweighers usually have maximum capacities of less than 75kg and achieve measuring rates of 150 packages per minute and more. The output signals from the checkweighers are always contaminated with noises due to vibrations of the conveyor and the object to be measured in motion. In this paper an employed digital filter is of Finite-duration Impulse Response (FIR) type that can be designed under the consideration on the dynamics of the checkweigher. The experimental results on the checkweigher suggest that the filtering algorithms proposed in this paper are effective enough to practical applications.

    A new class of adaptive control systems which is not only asymptotically stable but also optimal or sub-optimal to some meaningful cost functionals, is derived in this manuscript. This can be done by relating Lyapunov functions which are utilized in stability analysis of adaptive control, with solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi (-Isaacs) equations in the several optimal control problems. The three types of adaptive optimal control problems are considered; that is, Type 1) disturbance attenuation problems are solved as solutions which attain certain H property from exogenous disturbance to outputs, but no penalty is imposed on control effort, Type 2) quadratic cost functionals which include penalty on control effort and output variables, are to be minimized, and Type 3) disturbance attenuation problems are solved as solutions of certain optimal control problems (or differential games) where control effort is also penalized. Adaptive quadratic (Type 2) and H (Type 1 and 3) optimal (or sub-optimal) control systems are constructed for generalized adaptive control problems.

    In this paper, RasID is enhanced and evaluated systematically. RasID is an abbreviation of Random Search with Intensification and Diversification. RasID can search for a global minimum based on a probabilitiy density function, which can be modified adaptively using information based on success and failure of the past searching. As a result, RasID performs intensified search and diversified search iteratively to find a global minimum.
    The improvements of RasID are, (1) the probability density function is modified so that each variable can have its own unique density function, and (2) multiple candidates for solutions are created in the search to enhance the efficiency of the searching.
    Modified RasID is compared systematically with typical optimization methods such as Evolutionary. Programming and Fast Evolutionary Programming introduced recently using 23 different complibated functions. From simulation results, it has been clarified that the performance of Modified RasID is comparable to the ones of EP and FEP in spite of using one individual.

    In a bag-packing problem, it is important to determine how many items are to be put in a bag in order to make the pack weigh the given desired weight. In some cases, even though all the possible solutions to the problem are enumerated, it may be that none of them achieves a weight satisfactorily close enough to the desired standard. If a constraint is imposed that the sum weight of a pack should not exceed the acceptable maximum weight, such insufficient solution proposals turn out to be infeasible ones. In order to characterize such Infeasible solution proposals, the bag-packing problem is formulated into an integer programming.
    In the formulated model, the bag-packing problem is regarded as one of constraint satisfaction problem (CSP). Firstly, two objective constraints are taken into consideration, i) the sum weight of a pack should not be less than the desired weight, and ii) it also should not exceed the acceptable maximum weight. Secondly, to make the searching for a suitable candidate solution more effective, a certain constraint is imposed which may strictly limit the search space. An algorithm is developed that can enumerate candidate solutions for the imposed constraints. This algorithm is so developed as to make it possible to simulate the bag-packing operation.
    In the bag-packing simulation, such desperate situations are made clear in which there is no feasible solution. There are two of such cases: i) a case in which even searching is not necessary because it is obvious that there is no solution at all, and ii) a case in which, after examining all the candidate solutions, it is concluded that there is no feasible one. Concerning the former case, several numerical simulations are done by varying the values of several parameters to characterize the infeasible solutions. In the process of pairing the constituent items for a pack, the number of generating an infeasible solution may be reduced by evading the former case.

    When neural networks are trained incrementally, input-output relations that are trained formerly tend to be collapsed by the learning of new data. This phenomenon is often called interference. To suppress the interference efficiently, we propose an incremental learning model, in which Long-Term Memory (LTM) is introduced into Resource Allocating Network (RAN) proposed by Platt. This type of memory is utilized for storing useful training data (called LTM data) that are generated adaptively in the learning phase. When a new training datum is given, the proposed system searches several LTM data that are useful for suppressing the interference. The retrieved LTM data as well as the new training datum are trained simultaneously in RAN. In the simulations, the proposed model is applied to various incremental learning problems to evaluate the function approximation accuracy and the learning speed. From the simulation results, we certify that the proposed model can attain good approximation accuracy with small computation costs.

    Listening to music at concert is different from listening to it from CD player. It is caused from not only sound facilities, but also interaction between player and listener. In this research, we investigated relation between listener's respiration and music to analyze interaction in live performance. As a result, it was discovered that listener's respiration period was changed by music, and also player's 1-bar period was changed by listener, and it was suggested that mutual entrainment occurred between 1-bar period and respiration period.

    In this paper, the calculation method by sliding mode control is proposed to atmosphere temperature calculation of the slab put in the reheating furnace. The temperature up pattern, which the surface temperature of slab should follow, is given, and the atmosphere temperature of the slab for following the pattern is calculated by using sliding mode technology. The uncertainty, which shows the error of a model and time delay, etc., is given, and robustness are compensated. In the check of operation by the real system, the smooth attainment to set point and the followup to the tracking pattern have been confirmed.
