Among the students, who studied Japanese during World War II in Europe, there were those who researched Japan and educated Japan specialists, and those who engaged in cultural exchange after war. In most cases, it would not be so difficult to trace the outline of the activity of the former one, but it would be hard for the latter. This article focusses on M. Keravuori, who studied Japanese in Finland during the war and introduced Japanese culture such as Waka to Finland. She started her Japanese-related activities after reaching 60 years of age and was invited to Japan. Her activities were partially introduced in detail in Japan. I discuss the significance of her activity to the Japanese as well as the origins of her activities. It should be remarked that her activity was one of the results of Japanese courses taught by Japanese lecturers brought over during World War II.

A "Japanese study (NIHON JIJOU)" class looking at a variety of issues concerned with Japanese society and culture has been taught in Okayama University as a part of the General Education curriculum since 1999. The students are both Japanese and foreign students but the language of the class is mainly Japanese. Such a class is relatively rare because of this mix of students and also because of the variety of the lesson content. This report describes these contents and teaching methods in detail. It will also discuss the advantages of having such a class with mixed nationality students.

This paper examines the possibility of offering courses taught in English within the exchange program to Japanese students from the perspective of developing an international curriculum. The Hiroshima University Study Abroad (HUSA) program contains courses taught in English which have been offered to international students who are proficient in English. However, most of these courses are particularly designed for international students in the program, and have not been offered to Japanese students. I shall examine the possibility of developing the international curriculum taught in English for Japanese students and the preparatory steps for it by relating them to the internationalization strategies of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. A university's competence in training students to contribute to the global society has been actively promoted by the Ministry, and it has become timely to examine the possibility of developing an international curriculum for Japanese students and its significance from the new perspective of lifelong learning in the global context.

With respect to the use of the Internet tools such as e-mail, electronic bulletin boards, Web logs, etc., can hardly a day pass of late without fostering the competence in 'Language Expression' through which your own thought can be conveyed accurately and your interlocutor's intention can be grasped unequivocally as well. However, due to the fact that the 'Literature' in teaching at high school differs in its educational goal and content, the seminar on 'Language Expression Exercise' at university must start with, 'syllabus', 'context', 'media', etc. that will scaffold the system and the discipline so as to hit the target. The basic plan of the system scaffolding lies in (1)leaning the skill of 'Reading & Writing', (2)analyzing to deliberate the given themes or writing, followed by expressing appropriately, (3)being open to any remarks given, (4)reflecting on one's feedback to improve one's own expressive power, (5)being ready to work on another, preceded by the appraisal given. This is, in a sense, a cyclic process, and it is critically important to effectively repeat it. Put into educational practice, though, it will demand too much devoted effort and too heavy a load on an instructor. Therefore, the present paper addresses "Support system scaffolding for Language-Expression Learning with a focus on Short-time Web Writing", so that the instructor's burden can be relieved as much as possible, and its teaching method and skills can be systematized through electronic, communication technology.
