    Objectives: A questionnaire survey is performed to investigate the factors associated with seasonal influenza infection at Shimane university hospital. Methods: From 2014 to 2017, questionnaire were distributed to hospital employees who were eligible for vaccination. The sheet includes the following information: age of responders, living situation with children, their preseason vaccination status, and their history of seasonal influenza infection. Results: We analyzed data of a total of 5450 employees, and 6.2% had seasonal influenza infection history in the preceding season. Female sex (odds ratio [OR] 1.364, P < 0.027), aged 30-39 years (vs 20-29 years, OR 2.023, P < 0.001; vs ≥ 60 years; OR 4.206, P < 0.001), and living with children (OR 2.191, P < 0.001) were identified as factors associated with risk of influenza infection. Conclusion: Recognition of these risk factors may be beneficial to prevent and control influenza infection, and hospital employees should pay utmost attention for avoiding secondary influenza infection from households.

    The total cell number is the most fundamental data to correctly analyze the development of the tissues and organs. In the present study, we focused on the intestinal epithelium during the period of the intestinal elongation and villi formation. We first measured by using stereology the total number of the intestinal epithelial cells from junction between the stomach and duodenum to the cecum of C57BL/6J mouse embryos at embryonic day (E) 11.5, E13.5, and E15.5 during which the intestine elongates rapidly and the villi start to be formed. We then mathematically analyzed the total epithelial cell number data and formulate the proliferation. The results suggest that the intestinal epithelial cell proliferation is exponential and expressed using the same formula with that for rapidly growing in vitro cultured cells during the log phase. The mechanism which supports the exponential cell growth and the biological significance are discussed.

    Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is an evolutionarily conserved NAD+-dependent protein deacetylase. Given that the absolute cellular concentrations of NAD+ are much higher than the reported SIRT1 Km value for NAD+ (~90 μM), we hypothesized that changes in cellular NAD+ may not be a significant regulator of SIRT1 activity. To test this hypothesis, we examined the effects of boosting or inhibiting NAD+ synthesis on the acetylation of histone H4 lysine 16 and H3 lysine 9, reported targets of SIRT1. Altering cellular NAD+ concentrations from 100 to 1400 μM did not affect acetylation, whereas treatment with a class I/II histone deacetylase inhibitor elevated acetylation dramatically. Unexpectedly, neither SIRT1 inhibition nor SIRT1 knockdown increased histone acetylation. We conclude that SIRT1 may not be the primary deacetylase of the acetylated histone residues and that global acetylation levels may not always represent cellular SIRT1 activity.

    Dermoid cyst and epidermoid cyst develop due to inflammation or fetal trauma, and dermoid cyst aberrantly include epithelial tissue. However, the relationship between the pathological tissue and lesion image in these diseases is unclear. Here, we report a rare case of a patient in whom a large dermoid cyst was incidentally detected on the floor of the mouth during treatment of a dentofacial deformity. The presence of the cyst was confirmed by computed tomography (CT) and histological examination. The 16-year-old female patient presented with a swelling extending from the floor of the mouth to the chin. On initial examination, a painless, elastic, soft swelling of the mouth floor was observed, but tongue movement, articulation, and eating were not impaired. CT revealed an oval, well-defined, cystic lesion approximately 60 × 40 × 32 mm in size. Intraoral cystectomy was performed under general anesthesia. At the 1-year follow-up, there was no sign of recurrence or occlusion. The patient’s facial profile improved after postoperative orthodontic treatment.
