The patient is a 58-year-old man, who was seen on the 16th October, 1967, because of a recurrence of asymptomatic subcutaneous node, walnut in size, on the center of the medial aspect of the left thigh for the past three months.
He had been healthy until the subcutaneous nodule developed to appear. It was once removed surgically, examined histologically and a diagnosis was made as sarcoma, but it developed again to grow to the present size.
His past and familiar histories were nothing particular.
Physical examination revealed a walnut sized, subcutaneous node or tumor, which was well movable from the underlined tissue, but not from the covered skin, elastic hard in consistency and not tender on pressure. His general condition was good and laboratory examinations including hematology, liver function, serological tests, X-ray examination of bone and venography were all within normal limits. The tumor was exstirpated surgically and thereafter a treatment with X-ray irradiation was done.
Histologically, the tumor was not en-capsulated situating in the lower dermis and fatty tissue, composing mainly of giant cell, polygonal largesized cell and a few mast and small round cells. There were also a lot of small capillaries in the center of the tumor.
From the findings of histochemical examination including acid and alkali phosphatase, β-gluconidase and N-acetylglucosaminidase stainings, the giant cell and polygonal large cell were fibroblastic in origin, and a diagnosis was finally made as Subcutaneous Pseudosarcomatous Fibromatosis of KONWALER or Nodular Fasciitis of PRICE.
The patient has been healthy so far in 4 months after the treatment with exstirpation and X-ray irradiation without any recurrence nor metastasis.
