1) About a half number of the mast cells isolated from the rat peritoneal fluid are degranulated within 30 minutes in vitro by incubation with either of sinomenine in a concentration of 2γ/ml, compound 48/80 in 0.05γ/ml, monoiodoacetate in 10
-3 M or dinitrophenol in 5x10
-5M.
2) Neither synergistic nor antagonistic effect is found in the combined use of any two of the four compounds.
3) The mast cell previously degranulated by any of the substances exhibit no more changes, even if one of the other substances is added to the system.
4) Addition of glucose in a final concentration of 0.1 per cent considerably ameliorates the single and combined effccts of the substances.
5) It would be concluded from these findings that maintenance of the structure of the mast cell requires the energy metabolism, and also presumed that the histamine liberators have a common mechanism with the metabolic inhibitors concerning the degranulation of the cells.
