Basophilic degeneration and actinic elastosis of the dermis were studied from among 79 specimens of facial skin biopsy. These included 35 epidermal tumors and 12 erythematodes.
The elastosis disappeared following the incubation of the sections in an 0.25% trypsin solution at 37° for 30 minutes, while the basophilia of the collagen in the upper dermis as well as the elastic fibres in the middle and lower dermis resisted against this treatment.
Experimental ultraviolet elastosis was produced in the dorsal skin of black rabbits with a Toshiba GL-15 lamp (2537 Å maximum wave-length) following Ba-S depilation. The elastosis developed after 4 weeks' continuous radiation and exhibited rosary-like elastic bundles in the upper dermis, where basophilia of the collagen was not apparent yet.
Schematic illustrations of histogenesis of the basophilic degeneration and of the actinic elastosis were also presented.
