The properties of the 6-, 7-, and 8-nucleon systems are examined with the multi-configuration resonating-group method. From the results obtained for the various partial reaction cross sections, a general understanding of the reaction mechanisms in these systems can be achieved. This is important since, based on this understanding, one can devise practical ways to perform simplified, but sufficiently accurate, multi-configuration resonating-group calculations and, thereby, extend the utility of the resonating-group method to medium- and heavy-weight systems.

The multi-configuration resonating-group theory is used to investigate the properties of the five-nucleon system. The model space adopted here is spanned by p + α, d + ^3He, and not only deuteron but also ^3He-cluster pseudo-inelastic configurations. It is shown that the specific distortion effects of both deuteron and ^3He-cluster play important roles in the five-nucleon system. The results obtained here show that, with no adjustable parameters, the main characteristic features of the p + α and d + 3He differential scattering and reaction angular distributions can be reasonablly explained, it is also shown that the calculated total reaction cross sections and the differential cross sections in the p + α channel reproduce well the experimental values, while in the d + ^3He channel, the calculated values are found to be smaller than experimental values.

We have analyzed the proton elastic scattering of ^9Li and ^<11>Li using model K, which is a microscopic model based on the resonating-group formulation. It is assumed that ^<11>Li has a halo structure of two weakly bound neutrons around the ^9Li core. The results obtained for the differential scattering cross sections are quite satisfactory. This shows that model K is a useful model of great simplicity.

The structure of ^<11>Li as a typical example of the neutron dripline nuclei is studied in the microscopic framework of the ^9Li+n+n three-body system. In order to explain the exotic weak binding, the so-called hybrid model combining the cluster-orbital shell model and the extended cluster model is discussed. It is shown that the binding energy and root-mean-square radius can consistently be reproduced for adequate ^9Li-n potential and n-n interaction. The plausible ^9Li-n potential is proposed and discussed on the basis of the recent new experiments on the spectroscopy of the ^<10>Li system. A few remarks are mentioned on the microscopic studies of such neutron dripline nuclei.

The nuclear-breakup and Coulomb-breakup contributions to ^6Li → α + d and ^7Li → α + t breakup reactions which are used to access to the radiative capture reactions important in nuclear astrophysics are investigated by three-body calculations with the use of the realistic cluster-model wave functions for the bound and unbound states of ^6Li and ^7Li. For incident energies well above the Coulomb barrier, the nuclear-breakup contribution is as important as the Coulomb-breakup one up to forward angles where the Coulomb breakup was believed to be dominant. The effects of multi-step processes via various nonresonant continuum states due to the three-body dynamics are also found to be important. On the other hand, at sub-barrier energies the Coulomb-breakup contribution dominates over the nuclear-breakup one and the effect of multi-step process may be factored out.

We discuss the study of structure of light nuclei with the Antisymmetrized version of Molecular Dynamics(AMD). Furthermore we extend the AMD and apply these methods to the study of the structure of ^<20>Ne. We find the structure change in the excited states of ^<20>Ne, especially the one due to the change of the cluster structure.

A mean field approximation is used to investigate how an initial state of the He atom, made of two identical electron wave packets, can decay by the descent of an electron into a lower orbit and the ionisation of the second electron. The method can be easily generalized, and may help the study of the lifetime of nuclei such as ^<11>Li.

A resonance formula is derived in terms of the interaction, not employing the channel radius. It is argued that a three-body resonance is a very rare event. Applying a three-body model of ^9Li-n-n to a hardly bound nucleus ^<11>Li, a calculation is tried to find out a three-body resonance state. The result suggests that, if the potential for the ^9Li-n interaction is wider-ranged than the folding potential that we used for calculation, we might have a three-body resonance.

This is a review of the three- and four-cluster calculations by the Faddeev equations with the Pauli corrected cluster-cluster potentials. The cluster-cluster interaction is constructed by using the microscopic nucleon-nucleon treatment which is based on the resonating group method and the generalized orthogonality condition model.

A microscopically substantiated alpha-alpha potential model is proposed. In contrast to the conventional resonating group method spanning a restricted allowed space, the new potential operates in the complete relative motion space. The inclusion of the so-called forbidden space assures a more realistic description of the short-ranged Pauli repulsion of two alpha-particles. In comparison to other frequently used alpha-alpha potentials, it is demonstrated that a careful treatment of the Pauli repulsion becomes essential in the 3-alpha system. Unlike previous results, a reasonable value of the 3-alpha binding energy is obtained.

The mathematical framework concerning a class of α-cluster matter was studied from a full microscopic point of view on the basis of generator coordinate space. It is shown that all of the microscopic kernels can be attributed to those of one-dimensional α-cluster matter, if the image of a simple lattice is adopted as one of the models for the α-cluster matter. In other words, the problems of α-cluster matter were solved directly after those of an α-cluster chain. Furthermore, the analytical formulae for most of the kernels were written using the aid of computer derivations of the matrices. Results concerning α-cluster matter reproduce the bulk properties of ordinary nuclear matter fairly well. The volume and surface terms in Weizacker's mass formula are discussed within the framework of this model.

We investigate the possible existence of a ^7_ΣLi bound state within the frame of the microscopic α+"2N"+Σ cluster model by using the effective Σ-N interaction which reproduces the experimental binding energy and width of ^4_ΣHe. One bound state of ^7_ΣLi is found with about 1.5 MeV binding energy and about 4.6 MeV width.

Basic viewpoints are given for the application of the framework of the resonating-group method (RGM) to quark-hadron systems. Under the present scarce knowledge of the quark-quark interaction, much can be gained by making the most of some nice aspects of the RGM framework, which include the explicit evaluation of particular quark exchange contributions; the correct handling of the center-of-mass motion, and the exact treatment of spin, flavor and color degrees of freedom. An example of such a treatment is given by the recent RGM study of P-wave baryons, in which it is found that a long-standing problem of the missing LS force of the Fermi-Breit interaction can possibly be resolved by a proper treatment of a compact 3q structure embedded in the (3q)(qq^^-) baryon-meson continua.

Stochastic collision process is incorporated into the antisymmetrized version of molecular dynamics (AMD) as the effect of residual interaction and it is applied to the study of intermediate energy heavy ion reactions. The data of mass distribution of produced fragments in the reaction ^<12>C + ^<12>C at 28.7 MeV/u is reproduced very well, which shows the ability of AMD to describe the shell effect. Momentum distribution of fragments turns out to be sensitive to the stochastic collision process, and the projectile fragmentation appears with the inclusion of nucleon-alpha collisions in addition to the usual two-nucleon collisions in this relatively low energy region.

Three-body coupled-channel calculations were made of the fusion rate of the muonic molecule d^3Heμ and the particle-decay rates (λ_p) of d^3Heμ and d^4Heμ. It was found that the fusion rate of d^3Heμ is much smaller than the particle-decay rate and radiative-decay rate (λ_γ); unfortunately, d^3Heμ decays into (Heμ)_<1s>-d channel before the fusion. It was also found thatλ_p≃3λ_γ in d^3Heμ, whereasλ_p≃λ_γ in d^4Heμ. As a result, we can explain the strong isotope dependence in the observed X-ray strength between d^3Heμ and d^4H3μ. Fusion rate of d^3Heμ is very much smaller than the rate of the particle decay and radiative decay; unfortunately, muon catalyzed d-^3He fusion is not possible at all. The huge ^3He source in the moon surface should be utilized with magnetic or inertia confinement systems.

I have analysed the nuclear rainbow scattering data for the ^<16>O + ^<16>O system at E_<lab> = 350 MeV including the new data points at large scattering angles. The present results prefer the type A potential, which has been suggested in my previous analysis of the original data based on the dispersion relation between the real and imaginary parts of the optical potential. The results have been compared with other analyses of the same data.

^<16>O-^<16>O elastic scattering data are analyzed on the basis of the resonating group method (RGM). A good fit is obtained at E_<Lab> = 350 MeV where nuclear rainbow scattering is observed. The equivalent local potential to the RGM non-local potential is also calculated and compared with phenomenological optical potentials. On the other hand, we could not obtain a satisfactory fit to the scattering data at molecular resonance energy region.

The alpha-alpha potential is derived from the Skyrme effective nucleon-nucleon interaction using the folding model and the energy density model with density-dependent terms and also the resonating group model. The unphysical Pauli states occurring in some of these potentials were removed using the Marchenko inversion method and the supersymmetric transformations. This gives an alpha- alpha potential that is both microscopically-based and consistent with the experimental data. The off-shell characteristics of this potential are studied and their importance for various reactions discussed.

The differential cross-sections for the elastic scattering of alpha-particles by ^<40>Ca are analysed using the dispersion relation for optical model potentials with Saxon-Woods form factors. The dispersion relation gives rise to a real surface-peaked term as a consequence of the empirical surface imaginary potential. Including this real surface term gives a consistant account of the data over the whole energy region. The relation between this work and the ongoing studies of the alpha-particle structure of ^<44>Ti is discussed,
