Effective electromagnetic transition operators pertinent to the model space in the shell model are formulated within the framework of the first-order perturbation theory. The correlated operators thus obtained consist of one-body and two-body transition operators, the former of which is considered to be origin of effective charges, while the latter of which cannot be incorporated into the idea of effective charges. Two-body parts of the effective operators which arise theoretically are examined carefully by making the calculation of Cλ form factors of electron scattering as well as the Eλ transition rates. It is shown that the E4, E6 and M5 transitions in the 1f_<7/2> shell nuclei, which have required anomalous effective charges to reproduce experiment, can be interpreted by using the effective transition operators, in which the two-body contributions are considerably large to such an extent that the concept of effective charge is broken down.

The chiral structure of the top-bottom charged current is examined by using the process b→sγ. The new CLEO results on the radiative B decay constrain the possible deviation from the V-A coupling to be less than a few percent in the sector of the W-boson and top and bottom quarks.

We make a prediction for the long-distance effects due to vector mesons to B→X_sl^+1^- process. The analysis is done by extracting the Wilson coefficients of the relevant operators in the effective Hamiltonian. In this context the analysis is applicable for many models which have 10 operators like the Standard Model. We show that a consistent solution is exist if the long-distance contributions are include.

Starting with an effective hamiltonian with Coulomb plus scalar linear confinement potential, in which the hamiltonian is expanded perturbatively in 1/m_Q, we calculate systematically the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of heavy flavored mesons.

We study N=2 supersymmetric SU(2)/U(1) and SL(2,R)/U(1) gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models. It is shown that axial-vector duality is equivalent to mirror duality. In the SL(2,R)/U(1) model, this means that a background with a singularity is a mirror partner of a background without a singularity. Implications of this fact to space-time singularities are discussed. We also discuss SU(2)×SU(2)/U(1)^2 model, which is related to a four-dimensional cosmological background.
