Akaike’s Bayesian Information Criterion (ABIC) has been used in a number of studies to optimize the weights of constraint conditions to estimate the distributions of displacements on seismic faults and of slip deficits on plate boundaries from geodetic data such as displacements, tilts, and strains based on Bayesian models. The treatment of the prior probability density function (PDF) for the case in which a matrix, which represents the spatial derivatives in the existing inversion methods to include the smoothness of the distribution of slips or slip deficits into the inversion, is rank deficient is discussed. If the matrix consists only of spatial derivatives and their linear combinations and if the effects of boundary conditions are not taken into account, the matrix must be rank deficient and singular. On the other hand, the prior PDF cannot be uniquely defined using such a rank deficient matrix for the full space of model parameters, and, therefore, the marginal likelihood that is necessary to obtain ABIC cannot be uniquely calculated. In addition, an inversion method to avoid the rank deficiency of the matrix in the prior PDF is introduced.

The 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake displaced about 5,500 triangulation stations (national geodetic control stations) by 2ppm in strain change. To efficiently update the stations’ geodetic values (latitude/longitude and X/Y in plane coordinate system) caused mainly by episodic crustal motions, the coordinate revision software “PatchJGD” was developed based on coordinate transformation software “TKY2JGD” that transforms from Tokyo Datum to a geocentric reference system, Japanese Geodetic Datum 2000. Tools and manual for making the regional revision parameters for PatchJGD were also provided as “PatchJGD parameter recipe kit”. The parameters for the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake, the 2005 Fukuokaken-seiho-oki earthquake, the 2007 Noto hanto earthquake, the 2007 Niigataken Chuetsu-oki earthquake, and the 2008 Iwate-Miyagi nairiku earthquake were made with the kit and resurveyed results of selected triangulation stations, and used for updating the stations’ geodetic values. PatchJGD has also been used for updating public control points and reduced costs of resurvey.

Geodetic VLBI observations bounded within the VERA network started in November 2004 in order to monitor positions of the VERA radio telescopes with 10-9 accuracy. The VERA geodetic VLBI observations are the first series of regular observations that use a 1Gbps recording system. Increasing of recording rate to 1Gbps improves fringe detection sensitivity and reduces the scan length needed for fringe detection. Using a new scheduling algorithm that takes advantage of this increase in sensitivity, the number of scans in one 24-hour session has increased from 2 to 3 times that of geodetic VLBI with the conventional bandwidth. Forty eight observing sessions were operated during the first 3 years since 2004. Coordinates of the VERA antenna reference points and baseline lengths are estimated with errors of a few mm. The increase in the number of scans thus led effectively to reduce the scatter of the results by 1.4 times among the observing sessions, as well as to reduce standard deviations of estimated coordinates of antennas by 1.5 times in individual sessions. Secular variations are detected from the time series of observed baseline lengths.
