This paper proposes a method for estimating the turning radius in alpine ski turns using inertial and magnetic field sensors and GPS receivers. Ski-turn radii were estimated using gliding speeds and angular velocities, and gliding speeds were estimated using output from inertial/magnetic field sensors and a GPS receiver. The authors estimated the turning radii of carving turns and skidding turns using run data collected from a skier equipped with inertial and magnetic field sensors and a GPS receiver. The estimated turning radii for skidding turns were found to be more accurate than those calculated from the gliding trajectories, and the estimated turning radii for carving turns showed continuous change. Finally, the system used in the proposed method could be developed as a compact and low-cost system, and this method has the potential to be used for the quantitative evaluation of skill in ski turns.

This study aims to qualitatively clarify, through interviews, how a kendo master reads, attacks, and defeats the opponent. Previous studies related to “reading” have been conducted with the concepts of “clinical intuition,” “situational cognition,” and “predictive judgment” in the field of nursing. In addition, the “reading” of Japanese chess is positioned as a predictive judgment, and there are several pieces of research on strategies used during artificial intelligence battles. However, research on “reading” that comprehensively captures contextual, spatial, cognitive, emotional, technical, and proficient perspectives is still scarce. The subject of this study holds the 8th degree in kendo. He is an outstanding kendo player who has won several Japanese championships and is an experienced teacher. Data collection was conducted through two-to-one semi-structured, open-ended, and in-depth interviews by the two authors. The interview duration was two hours. The interview data were transcribed and then analyzed by the qualitative analysis method. As a result of the analysis, the kendo master’s reading was classified into six subcategories, namely, “determine the entirety of the opponent,” “show movement before the opponent does,” “establishment of linked movements,” “invitation to attack,” “creating inevitability,” and “natural reaction of the body.” These were finally divided into three categories, namely, “identifying the opponent,” “identifying movements of self and others,” and “occurrence of attack.” The study concludes that the kendo master, by demonstrating the power of outstanding reading explained by three elements, identifies the opponent’s ability, predicts the movement, and directs the flow of movement between the opponent and himself within the context of an attack. It is evident that an attack is composed of a series of steps. Further research should examine the relationship between reading and actual behavior, and focus on other masters.

This study aims to examine the structure of the corporal punishment-related factor and to explore predictors of corporal punishment behavior through a nationwide survey. A questionnaire survey was administered to teachers of athletic club activities working at Japanese junior high and high schools (337 valid responses from 39 prefectures) . Items of the corporal punishment-related factor scale, basic attributes, experiences of corporal punishment behavior, and experiences of feeling likely to use corporal punishment comprised the survey’s content. The scale’s items were scored from 1 to 5 points; the higher the scale score, the greater the awareness of the corporal punishment-related factor. An exploratory factor analysis (maximum likelihood method, Promax rotation) was conducted to examine factor structure. Covariance structure analysis was then conducted to examine the relationship between extracted corporal punishment–related factors and the experiences of corporal punishment behavior. (1) Results of factor analysis revealed 26 items associated with five factors: I) “teacher’s policy and beliefs”, Ⅱ) “unachieved goals of students and team”, Ⅲ) “teacher’s view of victory’s importance”, Ⅳ) “pressure to win the game” and V) “negative attitudes of students”. Reliability examination and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients confirmed the scale’s internal consistency. Additionally, subscale items’ factor loadings confirmed the simple structure, and factor validity was generally confirmed based on categories of corporal punishment–related factors from previous studies. (2) Results of analysis of covariance structure indicated that “teacherʼs policy and beliefs” and “teacher’s view of victory’s importance” might predict corporal punishment behavior. Additionally, this study found that pressure to win the game may be the cause of corporal punishment behavior. The results of this analysis could be used to assess corporal punishment–related factors that teachers perceive in athletic club activities.

In recent years, the use of various systems to manage condition data has been promoted. Being able to check the condition data of athletes can greatly contribute to the improvement of athletic performance. The purpose of this study was to report conditioning data and training results of athletes using a conditioning management system, and also to examine and report on the usefulness and challenges of using the conditioning management system. As a result, some issues were found in the input rate of the items to be entered by the players. On the other hand, all the support staff were able to check the condition of the players, and the usefulness of this tool was confirmed by the fact that the information could be shared among the support staff. In the future, we would like to use this tool over the medium to long term to accumulate various data and use it as an indicator to maintain and improve our condition throughout the year.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the recognition of the leading factors that influence the outcome of Japanese International Student Athletes (ISA) belonging to a US university during the adaptation period. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 ISAs (5 males and 7 females) who had experienced membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1. The content was converted into text, and then analyzed using qualitative data analysis. As a result, 64 codes, 37 small categories, 16 medium categories, and 6 large categories were identified. First, the personal factors [ability], the perceptual factors [realistic expectations] and [social support] were extracted as the leading factors that were recognized as affecting the academic performance of Japanese ISA. Next, as leading factors that were recognized as affecting the competition performance of Japanese ISA, personal factors [ability], perceptual factors [realistic expectations] and [social support], cultural distance [environment], and interpersonal factors [leaders] were extracted. Furthermore, the perceptual factors [realistic expectations] and [social support] were extracted as leading factors that were recognized as affecting the career satisfaction of Japanese ISA. Finally, in addition to the perceptual factors [realistic expectations] and [social support], the interpersonal factors [friends] were newly extracted as leading factors that were recognized as affecting the overall satisfaction of Japanese ISA.

There is growing academic and practical interest in mental health and wellbeing care systems for elite athletes, including rugby players. Concerns about career transition and its maladaptation are one of the athlete-related factors for mental health problems. The Player Development Program (PDP), which has been implemented mainly in New Zealand, Australia and Europe etc., is a system that supports elite athletes from multiple perspectives while they are active players. According to international practice reports and papers, PDP can also contribute to improving performance. We documented the practice and the feedback of the PDP conducted by the Japan Rugby Football Playersʼ Association (JRPA) as a “Research Note”. In the current practice, from December 2020 to October 2021, we matched 11 active Japanese rugby players and 11 Player Development managers (PDM) in a one-to-one setting to provide an opportunity to speak online once a month. During the period, 10 out of 11 pairs completed the trial. From the feedback after the 10-month practice, the satisfaction of the players was high, and the PDMs answered that it was necessary for active players. Future challenges for promoting the PDP in the Japanese sports society are the specification of PDP in Japan, securing financial resources for the operation, and securing PDM human resources.
