This paper deals with a method to estimate the porosity of multi-component particle systems packed tightly.
The method is developed with linking two theories derived by Tokumitsu and Kawamura et al independently, that is, the porosity of multi-component particle systems under the condition of various size ratio and shape can be estimated by using the porosity of each component as basic data.
Packing experiments of three component particle systems were carried out. Samples used in the experiments were glass beads of 1190 to 1000μm, 500 to 420μm and 125 to 105μm in diameter respectively. The following results were obtained.
The experimental values of the porosity approximately agreed with the theoretical values, and especially the close agreement between observed and calculated values was obtained on the point of mixing ratio to give beds of minimum porosity. Therefore, it is considered that this method is useful to estimate the porosity and the mixing ratio to give beds of minimum porosity in the case of three component particle systems.
Furthermore, this method will be applied for estimating the porosity of multi-component particle systems more than three component systems.
