In order to more accurate measure the size distribution and concentration of aerosol particles using an on-lined optical counter, some software techniques for data treatment are discussed. These are mainly concerned with the methods for noise cancelling from the original signal of scattered light, determination of the particle size, and calculating the statistical parameters of the size distribution.
The useful results of these software techniques on analyzing aerosol particle are as follows: (1) By means of two methods where the noise is cancelled by distinguishing pulse width, or correcting pulse height, the real reliable signal of scattered light can be obtained. (2) The particle size is effectively decided by using a polynomial approximate equation in the size range of 0.35-1.10μm in diameter for a polystyrene latex particle. (3) The distribution function of particle size can be determined by the least squares method and expressed as a graphic display.
Judging from those advantages of the software, it should be obviously noticed that this optical particle counter becomes useful for fast data treatment in combination with the micro-computer.
