    To design a high efficiency duct leading the gas-solid mixed flow to a dust collector, it is necessary to have a uniform flow in the divergent section of the duct.
    This paper presents the results of a study on the method to uniform the gas-solid flow through a two-dimensional divergent horizontal duct.
    First, the requisite conditions for the uniform gas-solid flow are shown from the viewpoint of fluid dynmics.
    Secondly, this shows the experimental results concerned with the distributions of the velocity of the gas-solid flow and the dust in a duct made of transparent acryl plates which is 500mm wide, 50mm in depth and 1000mm in length. Calcium powder was used as the fine dust in the experiment.
    This finally shows the optimal design of the guide vane which gives the uniform distribution of the gas-solid flow in the divergent duct.

    On the basis of the variational patterns of the void fraction in the powder beds under shearing by a ring cell shear tester, the powder yield processes have been classified into three types; a consolidation yield type (Type I), a shear yield type (Type II) and an type intermediate between Type I and II (Type III). It has been shown that, the consolidation yield locus (C. Y. L.) can be obtained by representing the consolidation yield processes of Type I on Roscoe's diagram (a three dimensinnal presetation of normal stress-shearing stress-void fraction relationships) and the C. Y. L.'s of the powders tested (three kinds) can be smoothly connected to the corresponding P. Y. L.'s to form almost circular arcs.

    The effect of pipe diameter on the pressure drop of a gas-solid pipe flow has been studied by use of acrylic pellet particles. It is found that the additional pressure-drop ratio (the pressure drop due to particles divided by the pressure drop due to air flow) is inversely proportional to the pipe diameter when the powder flow rate and the flow velocity are held constant. This result agrees with the theories of Owen and Clark.
    The additional pressure-drop-ratio increases with powder flow rate or mass flow ratio, but decreases with flow velocity. Experimental results are also analysed by use of a modified Yang's equation.

    Measurements of atmospheric particle size distribution are conducted by use of an ultrahigh-volume cascade impactor. It is found that the size distribution nearly fits a lognormal distribution, and that it also fits a Junge's Size Distribution for a particle diameter larger than 0.2μm and less than 10μm.
    Particle size is smaller but the concentration is higher in the winter than in the summer. It is also found that the frequency distribution function f(=-dRw/dDp) decreases with particle diameter, but the frequency distribution function fln(=-dRw/dlnDp) has a minimum value for particle diameter of 1 to 2μm.

    Oversize particles (particle size 5.66-6.73mm) were charged in on a screen (opening 3.36mm) and shifted. One undersized particle was dropped on the oversize particles and the residence time was measured. This experiment was repeated about a thousand times and the residence time distribution was obtained. The diameters of undersized particles are 1.89, 2.30, 2.72 and 3.15mm.
    This process belongs to a phenomenon termed “interparticle percolation” and was treated as a diffusion process. The time constants were proportional to the charge of the oversized particles to the fourth power. Futhermore, the time constants were proportional to the undersized particle diameter squared.

    Red mud is a waste from the Bayer process of alumina production. This paper is concerned with the dispersion and classification of red mud in a suspension and the improvements made on classified red mud in order to utilize it as a red-colored pigment. Conclusions derived from this study are as follows.
    1. It was found that Na salt of formalin condensate of alkil (C4) naphthalin sulfonic acid (Al-NSF) as well as sodium-hexa-metaphosphate (NaHMP) was effective as a dispersant to disperse red mud in water. The fraction of recovery in classifing the red mud in a suspension was also found to be estimated approximately by using the equations that have been proposed in the literature.
    2. It became clear that a red-colored pigment having essentially the same characteristics as ferric oxide, could be obtained by processing red mud. The process consists of classification, treatment with acid, calcination and modification on the surface of red mud.
