    There are many storage systems for coarse granular materials, such as coal and limestone, These systems include open piles, silos, domes, and storehouses. The silo system is better than other existing systems from the view point of environmental protection, effective use of a site, centralized control, and maintaining the quality of storage materials. For the silo system, however, the most important problem in design is to decide the hopper geometry parameters of the outlet provided at the bottom part of the silo. Blockage and arching in a silo never take place when the hopper geometry parameters are designed appropriately. For use in the theoretical analysis of the hopper section, there are a number of test methods for grasping the properties of fine granulars, but a test method suitable for coarse granulars, such as coal and limestone have yet to be established. This report shows the results of the flow characteristics by means of static compaction and the uniaxial compression test methods. Therefore, the flow characteristics of coarse granular materials, and those at the time of long-term storage are studied here.

    In many particulate processes, for example, in the sintering process, homogeneous compact powder is an intermediate state just before the final product and plays an important role especially in the manufacturing of homogeneous sintered alloy. That is, in order to produce homogeneous sintered alloy, homogeneous compact powder has to be developed as an intermediate state. For this, we need to make clear “what determines the variation in the strength of mechanical power”. However, this has not yet been discussed. Thus, in this paper, the variation of mechanical strength is fundamentally discussed, and the following conclusions are obtained:
    i) The above variation can be pointed out to be determined only by the thickness of the powder.
    ii) A new estimation method for the above variation is constructed by the introduction of a correction factor and shows the promise of being a useful engineering method.

    In order to elucidate the mechanical behavior of powder, the spatial porosity distribution in the powder bed can be considered to be one of the most important informations. However, the method to measure the porosity distribution has not been established sufficiently yet. Then, in this paper, concentrating on this problem, a new measuring system of the spatial porosity distribution formed in the powder bed, which is constituted of X-ray radiograph set up, a pair of cell (test and reference) for the porosity determination and turbidity meter, was presented. And, its measurement accuracy was experimentally checked.

    A new type of a system for measuring the dynamic physical properties of a solid particles bed by using a vibration method has been developed. The system consists of an electromagnetic vibrator with a controller for the frequency and the acceleration, a detecting sphere body attached to the movable plate suspended by copper wires from the main frame, and transducers of force and displacement. The detecting sphere is traversed horizontally in the particles bed at a constant rate, and the characteristic curves for several samples have been measured as the relationship between the tensile strength and the frequency under the condition of constant acceleration. It has been shown that the packing state of the particles bed is loosened by vibration at the characteristic frequency, and the mixing time of a mechanical agitation type mixer with a vibrator indicates a minimum value at this frequency.
