Solid additives are widely used to control the mechanical properties of powder materials in many industries, but the mechanics of these additives have not yet been elucidated. In this paper, the measurement of the tensile strength of a powder bed with a split-cell type tester was conducted to elucidate the effect of solid additives on the mechanical properties of powder materials.
Fused alumina powder, silica sand and limestone were selected as powder materials, and finely divided anhydrous silica was used as a solid additive.
The tensile strength of a powder bed containing the solid additive was related to the porosity of powder bed and the pre-compressive stress in respective experimental equations with a parameter of additive content.
Furthermore, the effect of the solid additive on the relationship between the tensile strength and porosity was discussed to elucidate its microscopic characteristics.
